Linking to 2004 Summer Olympics

Jonel,

All of these are linking to the 2004 Summer Olympics pages for the countries. Was that your intent?

Sue Anne 22:20, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

The 2004-specific links pre-dated my involvement with these templates. The more I think about these templates, though, the less I like them. Even beyond the Wikipedia:Avoid using meta-templates arguments, I find it just as easy to type/copy-paste the flag image and name. I'm not planning on using the templates anymore, but if you or anyone else finds them useful please do edit mercilessly to whatever makes them most useful to you. -- Jonel | Speak 22:40, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
I don't find them useful either and prefer to use just the flag image. There are already so many links, that using the template doesn't seem all that worthwhile.
Sue Anne 22:43, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
Most of the 2006 country pages use this template, and none of the 2004 pages do. I'm going to edit it. Jimbo (not THE Jimbo) 20:23, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
I think these template would be very useful for fixing up old Olympic pages. What would greatly help would be removing the hard-coded "at the xxxx Olympics" string in this template, and make the xxx an additional argument (i.e. "at the " and " Olympics" would still be hardcoded). For example, using "FlagIOC|USA|2006 Winter" would result in the current output, and would be appropriate for medal tables on pages referring to the most recent games. Using "FlagIOC|USA|Summer" would result in a wikilink to the overview page United States at the Summer Olympics, which would be the most appropriate link from pages that span multiple games (e.g. used in all-time medal tables, which appear on "Sport at the Olympics" pages for example. I would like to add the second argument to FlagIOC, and can probably make the edits quickly using AutoWikiBrowser, but would like to hear from others using the template. Andrwsc 17:40, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

New template argument

I have made the change described above. Unfortunately, the template is not backwards compatible with previous usage (e.g. {{FlagIOC|USA}} yields:   United States. The second argument is intended to follow one of the following forms: "<year> Winter" or "<year> Summer" or just "Winter" or "Summer". For example, {{FlagIOC|USA|2006 Winter}} yields:   United States and {{FlagIOC|USA|Summer}} yields:   United States (Look at wikilinks to see the difference.) My intent is to use this updated template for all medal tables, so that the country name links to the appropriate "Country at the xxxx Olympics" page instead of just the page for the country (which is not useful). Andrwsc 01:29, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Addendum to above: I made an improvement on July 11 to fix the backward compatibility problem. Omitting the second argument defaults to creating a wikilink of "Country at the Summer Olympics". Andrwsc 04:00, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
Addendum 2: I have made the flag image a named parameter, so you can specify an alternate flag for early Games. There should be no reason 'not to use this template now. ;) Andrwsc 04:29, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
Addemdum 3: This template is now smart enough to choose the correct flag by itself (assuming the "games" parameter is correct), so the flag argument has been removed.

Another argument

OK, so I was looking at the 2006 Winter Olympics article when I realized that the # of participating athletes in small print after the nation name looks nice. So I added this argument to the template, which can be used by just adding the # of participants as {{{3}}}, like this:

{{FlagIOC|USA|2006 Winter|211}}
  United States (211)

This way, you don't need to repeat the small tags over and over again, and it's pretty simple. JARED(t)14:31, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Host?

How could we denote that a nation was the host? Maybe by bolding the nation's name, or adding a small "host" after it? I'm not sure, but I think it may be helpful.... Suggestions? JARED(t)14:36, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Maybe something that would render like one of these, perhaps:
  United States (host, 211)
  United States (211, host)
The code would be simple to do. JARED(t)15:12, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
Hi Jared. To be honest, I don't think this parameter is necessary. In the only location in which I believe it would be used (i.e. the "Participating nations" section of each Games main article), I think it is unnecessary. By that point of the article, there are usually many times in which the host nation has already been mentioned. Therefore, there is no need to repeat it again, and possibly expanding the column width of the NOC list. Andrwsc 21:50, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
I really didn't either. I just saw that it was on one of the pages, so I thought at the time that it would be useful, but it's just one more thing to clutter up the template! JARED(t)15:39, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Proposal to replace {{flagIOC|USA...}} calls

FlagIOC is becoming part of a new proposal. Notice: There is currently a proposal to change calls {{flagicon|USA..}} to {{USA|..}} at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Flag_Template#Changing_USA_flag_calls. Please consider posting there to keep the discussion in one place. (SEWilco 02:44, 10 January 2007 (UTC))

So if I correctly read that thread, the proposal will not include this template? It seems necessary to keep the Olympics flags out of the discussion because they are used for totally different purposes. And the different parameters that this has would make a common template difficult. JARED(t)15:38, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I posted a detailed explanation of what I had done to "decouple" the current flagIOC from the previous implementation, and therefore, the WikiProject Flag Template folks seem happy to leave the Olympic flag usage alone. Andrwsc 17:34, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
The WikiProject Flag Template discussion may be of interest for its technical information. The Manual of Style discussion mentioned below is relevant because it is about Wikipedia usage of all flag icons. (SEWilco 06:03, 16 January 2007 (UTC))

IOC flag capability

Hello! Would it be possible to add a parameter that would allow the IOC flag to be displayed over the nation's flag? The parameter would address the issue of the correct representation of Netherlands Antilles athletes. I would think that the change would be similar to the one made at the {{flagPASO}} template, where, when the template is used, the link will be to the "Netherlands Antilles at the Pan American Games" but the flagicon would display the PASO flag. Thanks! Prayerfortheworld (talk) 03:15, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

1936 German flag

I am strongly suspecting that {{flagIOC}} when applied to Germany in 1936 is producing the wrong flag. The flag with the central disk was by 1936 was only used to represent the National Socialist German Workers' Party (Nazi party) with a flag with an off centred disc being used to represent the German state. Would it be possible to fix this?

The correct flag to use for representing the German state at this time would be File:Flag of German Reich (1935–1945).svg

Please see Flag of Nazi Germany and Template:Country data Nazi Germany for more information about the flags. --Thefrood (talk) 11:10, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

Not done: please be more specific about what needs to be changed. Which code needs changing on which page?  Sandstein  07:43, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
I've no idea how these templates work, Just that the flagicon at the moment is not showing the correct national flag - the SVG above is the correct national flag for Germany in 1936. "{{flagicon|Nazi Germany|1935}}" will show the correct flag if that is of any help. --Thefrood (talk) 08:03, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
On investigation it is the sub-template {{Country flag IOC alias GER}} that needs changing:
The line that reads | 1936 Winter = Flag of the NSDAP (1920–1945).svg should be changed to read | 1936 Winter = Flag of German Reich (1935–1945).svg, (I also strongly suspect that this should be repeated on the Summer line too). --Thefrood (talk) 08:18, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
Okay   Done. The 1936 summer has the same output as 1936 winter, so that will have changed too. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:44, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

Virgin Islands

Someone has recently changed a template (I don't know how) so that the Virgin Islands appear as "United States Virgin Islands", for example here, with the unfortunate consequence of turning blue links into red links (which I've turned into a redirect for the 2012 page), not to mention disrupting the alphabetical order. The same has been done with regard to the Paralympics. I think the USVI uses the name "Virgin Islands" at the Olympics and Paralympics, so we should probably reflect that. Flag problems

Hi, This is Raymarcbadz, I have a problem regarding the flag IOC templates.

South Korea did not visibly appear its flag to all of the IOC templates for countless days, and now, two other countries followed South Korea not to appear their flags. How will they be shown again to the templates? How are we going to adjust the image size. At least 26 pixels is allowed. Below 26 would no longer be seen. THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED! How are we going to solve this problem. Message me. Thank you! Raymarcbadz (talk) 18:19, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

This is a problem on Commons. Look at the history of commons:File:Flag of South Korea.svg and you'll see that the image changed several times between 11–13 October. Undoubtedly the cached png images at flag icon sizes were corrupted during these frequent changes and need repair. Nothing can be (or should be) done on en.wikipedia to fix the problem, and certainly nothing needs to change on this template. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 19:32, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Why this template doesn't use the regular flagicons?

I mean the icons from {{flagicon}}-template. They look nicer than the {{flagIOC}} ones. See:
flagicons vs. IOC icons:
Canada IOC icon is tiny, the stalk is not visible
Switzerland IOC icon is too big
Nepal IOC icon with incorrect borders

National Olympic committee

Request that a new "games" option, "NOC" be added. This would cause the country name to link to the relevant article for the National Olympic Committee for that country, (as listed at Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa, Pan American Sports Organization, Olympic Council of Asia, European Olympic Committees, Oceania National Olympic Committees).

For example {{FlagIOC|USA|NOC}} would produce   United States.

This would obviously require a fair bit of work piecing together the template code, so I'd like to get a yes/no on this before committing to the technical challenge. --LukeSurl t c 13:11, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

Thinking about this, this would probably be better as a separate template. --LukeSurl t c 09:59, 13 January 2016 (UTC)

Merging talk pages

Since this is the most-watched talk page of this family of templates (all of 18 people!) I think it would be best to redirect the talk pages of the other {{Flag templates}} here so that it's a "centralized" location for discussion; the majority of the templates are just wrappers for {{flagIOC2}} so most of the changes will likely be related to {{country alias}} anyway (i.e. requests for fixing how a flag appears or which country name shows up). If there's no opposition in a week or so I'll implement the change. Primefac (talk) 18:14, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

Andorra

I'm not sure if it's noteworthy enough, but from the 1988 Winter games and going back, Andorra used a version of its flag without the coat of arms on it during the opening ceremony. I'm also seeing it in the 1984 Summer games. 96.48.239.44 (talk) 09:42, 30 July 2020 (UTC)

I can certainly add in the historical flags for Andorra (not sure why they aren't in there already) but if there's a flag not on that list that was used outside those timeframes, there will need to be a reference and/or image of said flag for it to be added as a one-off exception. Primefac (talk) 10:52, 30 July 2020 (UTC)
It's not a one-off exception. I've been watching the opening ceremonies of past Olympics, and it appears that Andorra only started using the flag with the coat of arms after 1984. Here for example you can see their uncharged flag.96.48.239.44 (talk) 10:10, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

Flag of Greece states that the striped flag of Greece was adopted as far back as 1822 and was the flag meant for "use abroad". As I have just today seen another video (1956 Winter) with the striped flag, I believe that the Greek flag with only the cross was only used at the inaugural Athens Olympics, as the rest of the Olympics were "abroad". Ah nevermind, I've just seen the Helsinki 1952 parade and they use the basic cross flag there, so it seems like they just flip flop back then... 96.48.239.44 (talk) 09:32, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

the 1949 needs to becoming 1948? Also, I put a note in there that the flag changed in Feb '84 which is why we're using 1983; should there be a specific exception for the '84 Games to be the 1949 variant? also, is there evidence of these changes? Primefac (talk) 01:03, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

Hello! Can you correct the error concerning Ethiopia's flag for the 1992 Summer Olympics. The flag which is shown is Flag of Ethiopia (1991–1996).svg. The flag which is seen in the Opening Ceremony is the Flag of Ethiopia (1987–1991).svg. Yours sincerely, Sondre --80.212.169.236 (talk) 11:10, 24 April 2021 (UTC)

The flag changed in '91 but they were using the flag a year later in '92? Seems unlikely, though if there's evidence of this I'll of course change it. Primefac (talk) 17:06, 26 April 2021 (UTC)

Hello! Primefac. Take a look at Olympic Channel - Opening Ceremony from the Barcelona 1992 Olympics after 1 hour and 21 minutes.

The flag that is beared in is   Flag of Ethiopia (1987-1991).svg. It is exactly this flag they use during the 1992 Summer Olympics.
Yours sincerely, Sondre --80.212.169.236 (talk) 19:39, 26 April 2021 (UTC)
I'm not 100% convinced it isn't File:Flag of Ethiopia (1992-1996).svg, but it does appear to be the older flag. Exception added. Primefac (talk) 13:29, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

Hello! Primefac. Maybe it is the 1992-1996 flag which is shown during the parade of countries at the 1992 Summer Olympics. I think it looks were likely. See if you can add that to the country's flag during the games. It is a good proposition. Yours sincerely, Sondre --62.73.207.204 (talk) 13:38, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

I had another look; at 1:21:35 the flag icon is shown on-screen and it is pretty clearly the '91 variant. Primefac (talk) 13:41, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

Paraguays flag at the 1992 Summer Olympics

Hello! Is it possible for you to correct the flag of Paraguay during the 1992 Summer Olympics. The flag which is shown is Flag of Paraguay (1990–2013).svg. The flag that should be shown is Flag of Paraguay (reverse 1990-2013).svg. It is a different version i should guess. Yours sincerely, Sondre --80.212.169.236 (talk) 16:54, 24 April 2021 (UTC)

Not done. The flags used by Paraguay are dual-sided, so it's not so much a question of the "wrong" side but rather "which" side; since the image currently used is the "front" (based on the language used at our article) I think keeping it as-is is perfectly acceptable. Primefac (talk) 17:06, 26 April 2021 (UTC)

Hello! Can you see if you spot differences between the Paraguayan flag which is shown in the article and the one in television graphics. The icon is clearly different. Check out the video for the 1992 Summer Olympics - Opening ceremony and see what you find there?. I notice clear differences when you enlarge the pictures the flag which is carried in is different. Yours sincerely, Sondre --62.73.207.204 (talk) 15:58, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

As I said above, the flag is two-sided. The side of the flag seen in the video (1:43:18) is the "reverse" side, while the icon and what we have is the "front" side. Primefac (talk) 18:14, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

Flag of the United States at the 1960 Olympics

Hello! Can you correct the flag for the United States at the 1960 Summer and Winter Olympics?. I see that their is an old flag file of the United States US flag 49 stars.svg. The right image should beFlag of the United States (1959–1960).svg. Yours sincerely, Sondre --62.73.207.204 (talk) 13:10, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

The "49 stars" version is the one used throughout Wikipedia (presumably because the blue better matches the cloth specs). The "(1959–1960)" one is up for deletion. -- Jonel (Speak to me) 18:07, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
It depends on the dates of the Olympics. The 49-star flag was in use until 3 July 1960, and the 50-star flag from 4 July. Hope that clears up any confusion. Mjroots (talk) 17:36, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
Sondre's comment was about two different versions of the 49-star flag. Our article on the US at the 1960 Summer Games says that the 49-star flag was used despite the Games being after 4 July, but I begin to doubt that. It's not sourced. This image File:Olympische Spelen te Rome Opening USA vlaggendrager, Bestanddeelnr 911-5404.jpg of the US flag bearer at the 1960 Summer opening ceremony appears to depict a 50-star flag (note the position of the star in the bottom corner of the canton—the one roughly level with the 7th red stripe; on the 50-star version, the bottom row of stars goes out to the edge of the canton, while on the 49-star version, the second-lowest row goes to the edge and the bottom row does not). Anyone know where the idea that the US actually used an old flag came from? -- Jonel (Speak to me) 18:07, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
When I created the module back in 2016, I believe I grabbed all of the year and flag values from the group of existing templates, so if there were incorrect values (clearly, based on this talk page and that of the module) they've been around for a long time. I am, of course, more than happy to fix anything that needs it. Primefac (talk) 18:32, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
I asked on the Usertalk page of the user who added that note. Unless I see something else, though, my thoughts are that (1) Winter should stay with File:US flag 49 stars.svg that is much more commonly used on Wikipedia as the 49-star variant and (2) Summer should be changed to the current (50-star) flag, based on the photo of Johnson above and finding no support for a flag that was not then-current being used. -- Jonel (Speak to me) 12:44, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
Done. 1960 Winter will use 49 stars, 1960 Summer will use 50. Primefac (talk) 16:10, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

Not done, there is no way to know which aspect ratio was used based on that video, and as has been discussed before there are two sides to the flag (the only thing that changed between the pre- and post-1988 flags was the size). Primefac (talk) 00:47, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

There was a similar discussion here regarding Afghanistan's flag. It would appear that there is/was no standard size for the seal. If you wish to comment on that discussion and see if there a consensus can be reached, please feel free. Primefac (talk) 13:00, 20 April 2021 (UTC)

Hello! I see that the afghan flag which is used at the 2004 Summer Olympics is the current one. Afghanistan had a transitional government that year so the flag which is carried in very early in the opening ceremony is the flag from 2002 to 2004. Regarding to discussions earlier about afghan flags at later Olympic Games in London and in Beijing. It should be the flag from 2004 to 2013 which should be listed there. Based on this thread started by Mohsen1248 last year, the change was made to its current status. Hello! Can you check regarding the flag of Belize. From 1984 until 2016 they are showed with the flag before colors standardization. Based on our article on the matter, it sounds like there wasn't any standardisation during this period, but the fact that we have a flag that was "the official one" before 2019 makes me inclined to use it purely for that reason. Of course, if there was no standardisation then it's likely there were a ton of different varieties floating about, but we will likely never find every formal version used for every set of games so it's more reasonable to just go with what we have. Hello! Can you please make changes to:
1)   ROC. Template {{flagIOCteam|ROC_2020}} would be seen as link Russian Olympic Committee at the Olympics(ROC), not as now as link to disambiguation page ROC at the Olympics(ROC_2020). Code in parentheses must be without year.
