Wallis Budge is known in Egyptology to be inaccurate (even for his own time), outdated and mixing opinion with facts (see bottom of this page, for James Peter Allen's criticism on him). So it is advised to double-check any info taken from Budge's books, even on topics outside of egyptology, such as this article. The duke (talk) 13:38, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'm the one who cited Budge in this article, so I'm well aware of his flaws. But we are stuck with citing him due to a lack of any other sources of Ethiopian history in English. (The only other general histories of Ethiopia are James Bruce's book -- which only covers the history up to 1780, the year he left the country -- & Henze's Layers of Time, which is useful yet has a number of subtle flaws in his acocunt.) At first I thought that his history of Ethiopia was more reliable than his Egyptian work -- at places Budge updates bruce -- only to be surprised when I consulted one source he had used (i.e. H. Weld Blundell, The Royal chronicle of Abyssinia, 1769-1840), & found Budge had relied on an old student's trick in using that book: instead of reading it, he used the index to mine what he was looking for.
