Proposal to Move

edit

As found in the Companies House website and mentioned in the article itself:

Wrexham Football Club (2006) Ltd is the name of the 'phoenix' company that took over the assets of the old Wrexham Association Football Club Limited so technically the club is no longer known as Wrexham AFC

Should this article be moved to Wrexham FC? Marbles 21:23, 5 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've just removed that sentence from the article, as I think it is based on a misunderstanding of company law. Yes, the holding company is WFC (2006) Ltd, but it is "trading as" Wrexham AFC. What really matters is what name it uses on the badge etc. The website is still WrexhamAFC. Wikipedia has to follow, not lead. --Concrete Cowboy 00:15, 24 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Date of foundation

edit

Contemporary Wrexham Advertiser articles reports foundation of the club as 1864. Reports of the first match as taking place on 22nd October of that year (Wrexham advertiser 8/10/1864, 21/10/1864, 29/10/1864). Since 2012 it has been claimed that Wrexham were the 3rd oldest professional association football club behind Notts County and Stoke City, being formed in 1864. In 2019 upon the relegation of Notts County; Notts Forest(1865) challenged Stoke City as the oldest club in the EFL and succeeded when it was evidenced that Stoke were in fact formed in 1868. This was acknowledged by the FA but this doesn't mean to any form of logic that you can just substitute Notts Forrest as the second oldest pro club when it was formed a year LATER than Wrexham.

If Wrexham wish to keep acknowledging Stoke's claim that's their prerogative perhaps but under no circumstances are Nottingham Forest older than Wrexham! And having this format list an 1865 club as older than an 1864 club is evidence of how poor a source it is. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:23C8:A080:4E01:AC4D:DF39:C072:3472 (talk) 17:01, 15 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Wrexham badge.jpg

edit

Image:Wrexham badge.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. The state of this page.

edit

I've just taken a look at this page for the first time in many months, and have to say that I am absolutely horrified with the absolute shambles this article has become. It has obviously become a plaything for a few anonymous editors who have been putting any old rubbish in here, and the continual edits and reverts have left crap all over the place - "Grove Park School for disabled children" in the early history of the club??? I am immediately semi-protecting this article to keep the vandals out - if you want to edit it, get yourself a registered account and wait 4 days. I'm also going to revert the article to the 12th October version which at least seems to be relatively problem-free - sorry if some genuine edits get reverted, but good-faith editors can always put those back. -- Arwel Parry (talk) 23:21, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Erroneous wikilink?

edit

In the history section (1872 - 1905) a reference is being made to the Football Combination league, which Wrexham joined in 1890. However, the wikilink points to an article about a league that wasn't started until 1915 and says that it shouldn't be confused with something else.

Maybe I'm just a stupid dutchman who knows nothing about English/Welsh football, but shouldn't the link point to The_Combination rather than Football_Combination? Skysmurf (talk) 21:52, 20 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wrexham FC history

edit

I think it's too long for the main page and a new page would be suitable - "History of Wrexham AFC" - for example. Pretty much every club has an additional page for their history as there's a lot of text.

Would anyone be able to move the history to a new page and copy the text/pictures/references over? I would be happy to then update the new page as there's quite a bit missing. For example, we have more text on the current season then we do for 1960-70!

AndrewRichardJones (talk) 19:25, 18 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

The history is VERY confusing. Where do all the moves fit into the English system? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_football_league_system Of course, that is pretty confusing itself. 74.127.200.37 (talk) 18:23, 25 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Older Football Clubs in Other Codes

edit

The article claims that Wrexham is the 3rd oldest football club in the world but this is objectively wrong.

Sheffield Football Club was founded in 1857. Melbourne Football Club was founded in 1859 and Geelong Football Club was founded later that same year. All those 3 football clubs still exist.

Wrexham was founded in 1864. Therefore, Wrexham can't be the 3rd oldest football club in the world. However, Melbourne and Geelong play Aussie Rules.

Does the article mean that Wrexham is the 3rd oldest soccer club in the world? If so, then this should be clarified in the article.

@WelshOfWallStreet, Wales? (you sure?) This is about Wrexham. :D Wrexham A.F.C. is the third oldest association football team still in existence. The lead used to say just "football" which means different things internationally, so corrected to "association football" (happily not "soccer") after this IP comment. The issue is resolved I guess. Ownership details in infobox

edit

I don’t know if this is just quibbling, but I’m not sure if “RR McReynolds Company, LLC” should be listed as the owners as it’s not a registered company in the UK (no entry on Companies House). It was in fact registered in Delaware in October 2020 [1] and has a branch registered in California in September 2021 [2]. Thoughts? — Arwel Parry (talk) 19:49, 8 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Is there a guideline against foreign companies in football club infoboxes? Arsenal F.C. and Leicester City F.C. do have foreign owners in their infoboxes? I believe it is important that readers can easily see the ownership of a club (especially with the coverage around it), regardless if the owner is British or not. But be free to explain further, confused at what the issue is, do UK football clubs only list the owner if they're British-owned? Thanks DankJae 19:28, 10 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Here is information about the ownership of Wrexham AFC on their own site (See here), it says "Wrexham AFC Limited is wholly owned by Wrexham Holdings LLC. The R.R. McReynolds Company, LLC, a company formed pursuant to the Delaware Limited Liability Company Act in the USA own 95% of the shares in Wrexham Holdings LLC. The R.R. McReynolds Company, LLC is owned equally by Rob McElhenney & Ryan Reynolds and as such, they are jointly the ultimate beneficial owners of 95% in Wrexham AFC Limited." The replacement is more blurry and smaller, but I guess colour wise more accurate. The green and red is slightly lighter (older version to be deleted on Dec 23). Would prefer SVG, but seems to not be available for the current logo with 1864. DankJae 19:46, 19 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

That has 1873 rather than 1864, so the old logo pre-2012. It also looks stylistically different (may be a user mock-up?), in particular the dragons. It would be best for one from official Wrexham A.F.C. documents. Thanks though. DankJae 22:25, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Usage of "relegated"

edit

In the left, it says that at some time in the past the club was "relegated." This may be a term of art in the UK to mean "reduced to some understood lower status," but as a U.S. reader, I'm left saying "relegated to WHAT?" Edison (talk) 13:13, 24 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

In the pyramid of British football certain numbers of teams drop each year from one league to the next one down; this is relegation. Some equal number, of course, go from the lower to the higher; this is promotion, which Wrexham has just achieved with this weekend's game result. Happy days, ~ LindsayHello 16:45, 24 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
While I am open to it being more clear, if "relegated" follows a statement such as "fourth tier", then assume it means to the fifth tier. DankJae 17:14, 24 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Because of how the English football pyramid works, there is only one place a relegated professional team can go—-that is the league below. It is therefore self evident, unless you are talking about relegation to regional leagues in which case there may even be a choice of which league the club enters. Regional divisons and leagues begin below the top tier of the National League from which Wrexham have just gained promotion from. SteadyJames (talk) 14:54, 27 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Proposed new article - List of Wrexham A.F.C. records and statistics

edit

With this article at over 160kB, I believe this article would qualify for WP:SIZESPLIT as it seems quite bloated currently. I was considering splitting sections from this article such as: Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, Steve Edwards Goal of the Season Award, Top scorers and PFA Team of the Year onto a new page - List of Wrexham A.F.C. records and statistics. I would also add honours and European records etc in line with other existing pages such as: List of Port Vale F.C. records and statistics. What are people's thoughts on this? Michaeldble (talk) 15:55, 24 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

edit

In the part of the article documenting the goings-on in the early years of this century, there’s a bit: “Had the club still been in Administration by 3 June (2007) then Wrexham would have automatically been expelled from the League because of their financial situation. Wrexham Football Club (2006) Ltd is the name of the "phoenix" company that took over the assets of the old Wrexham Association Football Club Limited – technically, the club is no longer known as Wrexham Association Football Club due to the takeover of the club by Neville Dickens and Geoff Moss and their associates; this is reflected on new merchandise, although most fans will still refer to it as "Wrexham AFC".” This is not actually a full description of what happened, but the tangled web of administration and suchlike is complex, as I discovered while poking around on Companies House:

— the original limited company was company number 124022, Wrexham Association Football Club Limited (The), incorporated on 29 August 1912, in administration between 3 December 2004 and 29 May 2007, still showing as active on Companies House, though with accounts overdue since 2005! This is the company Gutterman and Hamilton were directors of.
— Company number 5800501, Wrexham Football Club (2006) Ltd, incorporated 28 April 2006, dissolved on 10 March 2015. This is the company Neville Dickens was a director of 2006-2008.
— there’s also company number 7638718, Wrexham Football Club Limited, incorporated 18 May 2011 and dissolved on 8 January 2013, Jonathan Elwyn Harris was the only director, and the company was dissolved by compulsory strike-off, implying that it never filed any accounts with Companies House.
— Company number 7698872, Wrexham AFC Limited, incorporated 8 July 2011 - this is the company Ryan and Rob bought, which they and Humphrey Ker are the current directors of.
— there’s also company number 6931786 Wrexham AFC Community Trust (until 2 November 2021, The Racecourse Community Foundation), incorporated 11 June 2009, a “Private Limited Company by guarantee without share capital use of ‘Limited’ exemption”, Humphrey Ker is one of 5 remaining directors of this company. They filed an annual report and accounts with Companies House earlier this year which makes interesting reading, documenting their charitable work promoting football in North Wales.

Malayalam Translation of the page (Help Needed)

edit

Hi I created a Malayalam translation of this page. But the automatic translation of the name 'Wrexham' wasn't right in Malayalam, so I edited it. But I think because of that, it didn't get linked to the original article.

Forgetting I did the same exercise six months ago, I did it again (Because when I looked for the malayalam version of the page, I couldn't find one, sorry.)

But what I did is, I made both pages exactly the same.

So, if anyone could, please choose one page, link it to the original and delete the other one.

Linking both here (They are exactly the same):

@Libinthathappilly, bit confused by what you're after. But if you're questioning why under "languages" Malayalam doesn't appear, you need to edit the Wikidata item and add the title of the (correct, by your definition) Malayalam version there (near the bottom in the "Wikipedia" list of language versions, I assume with language code ml).
The concern of deleting the article has to be raised on Malayalam Wikipedia not here on English Wikipedia, although you appear to be the sole author of both versions so you could (assuming a similar policy to here) redirect the one with the incorrect title, to the correct one. Otherwise follow Malayalam Wikipedia's policy concerning deletion, moving or redirecting.
Nonetheless, thanks! DankJae 19:10, 1 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

The "Affiliates" section in the infobox needs a rethink

edit

Cefn Druids share a stadium with the women through a multi-year contract and are based in Wrexham, makes sense. Lex XI is based in Wrexham and the historical connection is explained here. Wrexham A.F.C. Women, obviously.
Liverpool´s reserves used the Racecourse for a while and donated money to the club during the administration. Good enough?

I have no idea what the connection to Colwyn Bay or Prestatyn Town is. The respective articles offer no insight, google failed me and a fan forum was equally stumped. At least these 2 should be removed if none can be found.

Gresford Athletic F.C. on the other hand also shares a ground with the women rn and operates out of Wrexham. A connection is almost as strong as with Cefn Druids and might warrant inclusion as long as the women play at The Rock.

Club Necaxa is also on its way to becoming an affiliated club due to the shares exchange and the spin-off show. We should know more sometime in 2025. Residentgrigo (talk)
