Wombourne spelling edit

I'm very sceptical about the orthography story as recounted here. The spelling Wombourn was more or less standard then, as a glance at any old map will show. Cf the maps at [Staffordshire Past Track], where the spelling without the e is used on the 1775 Yates map, the 1899-1904 and the 1945-48 OS maps. Hence I've amended as charitably as I can. Frankly, I think it very unlikely anyone even considered the alternative spelling, which seems to have caught on circa 1960 and is still hated by many locals. I would be happy to have this disproved by a reference, e.g. to any GWR minutes or a referenced secondary source.Sjwells53 (talk) 09:29, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Additionally the spelling sits uncomfortably with the spelling of Wombourne in 1) Wombourne Branch Line, a Wikilink in the article and 2) in the only working citation, which consistently refers to Wombourne. Keomike (talk) 21:30, 14 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • The citation has also been doctored to say Rail Around Birmingham and the West Midlands: Wombourn station whereas the website referenced only uses Wombourne. There is a history of changing the spelling in this article that mirrors the disagreement in the Wombourne article and also in the village itself over the last 50 years. To avoid edit wars I suggest that the article adopts the style Wombourne station (also spelt Wombourn station) which mirrors the style on the village article.
