A few details don't square up. The commander of the Emmet Rifles in 1865 was James Culligan, not James Armstrong. But Armstrong did command the Petaluma Guard in 1863-4. Gaye Lebaron's source is Adair Heig. I believe the story is on page 50 of History of Petaluma: A California River Town, if anyone has access to a copy. Ibadibam (talk) 03:03, 22 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Another interesting note: Heig apparently identifies as Emmett Rifles as the same unit as the Hueston Guard. The California Military Museum site linked above says the Emmet Rifles (note different spelling) were mustered out in 1866, but apparently has muster rolls on file as late as 1884. I can't find any mention of a Hueston Guard until it is named as a unit of the 2nd Brigade, California National Guard, in Langley's 1881 directory for San Francisco (top of p. 59).
