List of victims

Howdy Widepedians,

I just corrected the address of the location of the tragedy. Originally in two separate locations, the address was incorrectly listed as 141 Chartres Street. 141 Chartres Street is the correct address of the Jimani bar, which is located on the first floor of the same building. However, 604 Iberville street is the correct address of the Upstairs Lounge. Additionally, I deleted any mention that the Upstairs lounge was located in the French Quarter, as that is an adjacent neighborhood instead of the location of the bar. If the address has been listed incorrectly, I question what other inaccuracies may exist on this page. Guaguanco127 (talk) 21:08, 24 January 2021 (UTC)

Iberville Street is one block north of and closer to the river than than Royal is. I wouldn't have thought it subject to disagreement that that's in the French Quarter. Largoplazo (talk) 23:50, 24 January 2021 (UTC)

@Largoplazo: Sorry for the delayed response, somehow this notification slipped by me.

So Iberville Street is actually perpendicular to Royal Street, not parallel. Royal Street's parallel would be Chartres Street, which was the other cross-street in front of the Upstairs Lounge location. It's totally understandable confusion because the French Quarter is oddly tilted and doesn't follow NSWE guide-points. Royal Street and Chartres Street both begin at Canal Street in the Central Business District and formally enter the French Quarter (overseen by a neighborhood association called the Vieux Carré Commission) halfway across Iberville Street. The Upstairs Lounge, falling on the Central Business District side of Iberville Street, was therefore located in a more unregulated borderland next to the French Quarter. This location affected how its building was/wasn’t inspected prior to the fire; shaped the degree of motivation police would display in their investigation (the victims perished in what many felt was a seedy area); and also became significant when the Vieux Carré Commission was wrongly blamed by authorities for a role in the fire. In direct response to that incorrect blame, the head of the Vieux Carré Commission actually became the first elected official to publicly speak about the fire. The MCC was not the first standalone church that welcomed gay congregants. It was, however, the first national gay-friendly Christian fellowship, which eventually became a formal religious denomination. Additionally, the citation regarding Fieseler's book was incorrect, and the page number itself was incorrect.
