Tanks in World War I

We're totally in OR territory here, but during World War I the AIF intended to form an Australian tank unit, as it was envisaged that tanks would be widely used in 1919. As a first step, a small number of RAE officers were seconded to the British Army's Tank Corps. They have a claim to be the first Australians to operate tanks in action. But the first unit of the Army to do was, as noted in the article, Lieutenant Fred Mullaly (NX166)'s A Squadron, 2/6th Divisional Cavalry Regiment, with captured Italian tanks. @Hawkeye7: Would this have had something to do with Fuller's Plan 1919 by any chance? I ask because I noticed mention of an article by Albert Palazzo on this topic and wondered if it might shed some light on this. Thanks again. Anotherclown (talk) 22:43, 13 July 2015 (UTC)

The article I'm thinking of is Palazzo, Albert. "Plan 1919 – The Other One". The Journal of the Society For Army Historical Research 77 (1999):39–50 (I'm just guessing because it was included in the bibliography at the Plan 1919 wiki article). That said on further review it probably covers the plan for the widespread use of gas in 1919 not Fuller's plans for tanks. Unfortunately I don't have access to the article so I'm just guessing. Any chance you have come across it in your research and could confirm / deny what it covers and if it might be useful IRT AIF tank plans? Kind regards. Anotherclown (talk) 22:59, 13 July 2015 (UTC)

Vietnam War

"As such in February 1968, C Squadron, 1st Armoured Regiment was sent to Vietnam, with a total strength of 20 Centurion tanks.[84]". I suggest the following be added to clarify this statement (I registered to do this myself, but the editing protocols escaped me): 'Two of the four tank troops were held back, however, until the Centurions had proved themselves capable of operating in the conditions. The tank squadron reached full strength on 5 September 1968.' See 'Canister! On! FIRE!, Vol 1, p164/p247.

Upcoming aquisitions

I've recently added an update discussing the plans to expand the tank fleet, and add new heavy engineer vehicles based on M1 tank chassis. Is anyone aware of sources which discuss the rationale for this and how these vehicles will be allocated and/or used? It seems a bit odd to be spending a lot of money on heavy armour when the ADF is meant to be re-orienting itself to fight in the Asia-Pacific so it would be good to know how these tanks fit into the planned order of battle. Hugh White discusses the IFV orders in his recent book How to Defend Australia and argues that they are ill-suited to Australia's needs, but doesn't discus the tank plans.
