"Open source development" is biaised edit

It looks like some disguised Boxee praise to me. I'm marking this as POV-check. --Hell Pé (talk) 16:58, 6 January 2011 (UTC) I have deleted this section. --Hell Pé (talk) 15:31, 7 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Deleteted section "Television sets with Integrated Internet" edit

I deleted the section named ""Television sets with Integrated Internet" as this Smart TV article is not meant to just list and links to the manufacturers websites like it did. Here below is a copy what was in that section and you will understand 164.4.17.33 (talk) 06:16, 12 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

""Television sets with Integrated Internet" edit

"The following is a list of television sets with integrated internet. There are more than 10 smart TV platforms currently available for consumers[1] offering access to applications like NetFlix,[2] YouTube,[3] CinemaNow,[4] Pandora radio,[5] Flickr,[6] Vudu,[7] Yahoo TV Widgets[8] and more.

Merger proposal edit

I propose that the Hybrid digital TV article get merged into this Smart TV article, (just as the Connected TV acticle was merged into this Smart TV article), since they basicially describe the same technology that is used for the same purpose, and the devices for it are basicially the same, at the when it comes to the set-top boxes. Anyway, the most common term for this type of technology seams to be "Smart TV", not Connected TV nor Hybrid TV, so why have several articles for the same thing? 164.4.17.33 (talk) 08:38, 9 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'm going to bump this merger here. How about this; merge Smart TV, Hybrid digital TV and IPTV, into a single article. If no one objects I'll go ahead and do that. Lostinlodos (talk) 00:16, 1 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
They certainly look like they have pretty similar content to me Beth Holmes 1 (talk) 06:45, 26 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes to merging Smart TV and Hybrid digital TV, but no to merging IPTV, and also no to merging Internet TV or Web TV into the Smart TV article, since those are just protocols and terminologies to transfer a television/video signal over the internet instead of traditional cable/over-the-air, and that is not the same as Smart TV technology. 164.4.17.33 (talk) 09:55, 8 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yep, that's true. IPTV is completely something else. Smart TV and Hybrid digital TV should merge. I suggest you do it now. --Chacha15 (talk) 20:12, 8 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Digital media receiver edit

Either the difference between a Smart TV and a digital media receiver should be explained, or the articles merged. -- Beland (talk) 06:38, 25 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

They are not at all the same, a digital media receiver is almost by definition a dumb hardware box, while Smart TV more describe software or rather function of the software as the hardware behind a Smart TV does not matter as much. 85.226.33.202 (talk) 18:22, 2 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Also, digital media receiver is more likely to be stand-alone box, while a Smart TV (and not a Smart TV set-top-box) is more likely to be integrated into the TV from factory~. 85.226.33.202 (talk) 18:26, 2 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think that per definition Smart TV platform/middleware have to have a public SDK (Software Development Kit) for apps and an app store, so user installable apps/addons/plugins is kind of the minimum requirement definition of a Smart TV platform/middleware 164.4.17.33 (talk) 09:49, 8 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Web 2.0 technology? edit

Can we stop using this phrase? It is a BS meaningless phase made up to sell someone consulting. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.226.212.190 (talk) 12:26, 26 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

As long as Web 2.0 still have its own well written article here on wikipedia it continues to be a valid term here. 164.4.17.33 (talk) 15:14, 7 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

TiVo and its TiVo DVR boxes are not a Smart TV platform or middleware yet edit

In my opinion TiVo and its TiVo DVRs (Digital Video Recorders) can not yet be classified as a Smart TV platform or middleware yet, because it does just not offer the addon application plugins, internet connectivity and social networking features that are associated with a Smart TV / Connected TV platform so far. 164.4.17.32 (talk) 14:20, 19 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

TiVo have no public SDK (Software Development Kit) for apps nor an app store, such as the iPhone/iPad and other Smart TV devices have. And since user installable apps/addons/plugins which is kind of the definition of a Smart TV platform/middleware the the TiVo does not yet quite fit the bill, but if and when the TiVo gets an app store just like the iPhone/iPad then I think that it can be called a Smart TV platform/middleware. 164.4.17.33 (talk) 09:46, 8 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Apple TV or iOS is not a Smart TV platform or middleware yet edit

In my opinion Apple TV can not yet be classified as a Smart TV platform and neither can iOS be classified a Smart TV middleware yet, because the Apple TV which is the only "made for TV" hardware does just not offer the addon application plugins, internet connectivity and social networking features that are associated with a Smart TV / Connected TV platform so far. 164.4.17.32 (talk) 06:36, 18 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

The Apple TV's is increasing in importance but as Megan Lavey-Heaton of TUAW (The Unofficial Apple Weblog) writes here: http://www.tuaw.com/2012/08/06/the-apple-tvs-increasing-importance/ "Forbes agrees with Barrett's stance, wondering if the Apple TV has become a legitimate platform rather than the hobby Steve Jobs tinkered with. I think it'll achieve this status when an Apple TV SDK comes out." 164.4.17.32 (talk) 08:42, 7 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

PlayStation 3 is not quite a Smart TV platform or middleware? edit

In my opinion PlayStation 3 (PS3) game-console can not be classified as a Smart TV platform and neither can it be classified a Smart TV middleware yet, because the PS3 which is the only "made for TV" hardware does just not quite offer the width of addon generic application plugins, internet connectivity and social networking features that are associated with a Smart TV / Connected TV platform so far. 164.4.17.32 (talk) 12:46, 31 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Xbox 360 is not quite a Smart TV platform or middleware? edit

In my opinion Xbox 360 game-console can not be classified as a Smart TV platform and neither can it be classified a Smart TV middleware yet, because the Xbox 360 which is the only "made for TV" hardware does just not quite offer the width of addon generic application plugins, internet connectivity and social networking features that are associated with a Smart TV / Connected TV platform so far. It should however be noted that the comming next-generation Xbox 360 software update will contain Microsoft Mediaroom Smart TV middleware platform, but that does not make Xbox 360 in itself a middleware 164.4.17.32 (talk) 12:46, 31 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Miomni is not a Smart TV platform or middleware edit

Removed Miomni from under the "Smart TV#Middleware provider for TV set or TV companion box available to multiple third-parties" section because Miomni only makes content apps for other platforms such as Yahoo! Connected TV, Miomni do not make a Smart TV middleware framework themselves. If we listed it then you have to list all other makes of content apps including YouTube, etc. 08:23, 4 January 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 164.4.17.32 (talk)

Does it all go through the TV antenna? edit

The article tells you what it does but doesn't outline the basics of how it actually works for a newcomer. Are there separate cables for the TV signal and the internet, and its combined in the unit, or does all reception and transmission go through the TV antenna on the roof? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Diticenalt (talkcontribs) 21:23, 15 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Smart TV is not a specific product; it is a concept, so it can not be explained as easy as that, (as as started it should not be confused with Internet TV nor Web TV), but yes internet and some type of television signal are minimum requirements, however exactly how you obtain your internet connection and television signal is not specific. 138.103.17.17 (talk) 11:06, 29 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

About The Controversy Section edit

Why is Google TV referred to many times in the "Controversy" section? I thought this article was about Smart TV, so why don't you talk about what's controversial about the subject instead of a competitor? 70.27.127.172 (talk) 17:39, 31 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Connected TV Marketing Association edit

I removed this comment about Connected TV Marketing Association that was posted under the "Controversy" section; "To respond to these controversial issues and create direction for the industry the Connected TV Marketing Association was formed as an initiative to provide oversight for an industry in flux", as it had no external references or indication about notability, not does it have its own article on Wikipedia. In fact the only thing that I could find about it is that Zachary Weiner is the co-founder of it, and it does not appear to be a non-profit organizational or anything like that, and to me it just bve an advertising firm who are looking to make some money on the Smart TV / Connected TV hype, even their website is just a placeholder so cound not get more information there either. 164.4.17.32 (talk) 11:02, 29 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Insane number of references edit

25 references in the intro (with only one used in the body of the article), and 18 references under the first paragraph in the Technology section. That's insane! - Meewam (talk) 00:37, 11 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

In fact, it's excessive. Someone has bought into the fallacy that more references is better, without limit. It would be good if someone judicious could cull it down to the main ones. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 07:03, 11 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Irrelevant references and information edit

I think there is a fair amount of references, perhaps more than enough but some of them are irrelevant to the topic such as Xbox and Google TV is listed plenty of times as well. I also think the list of contents is relevant to the topic of the article but could use more elaboration, especially considering the number of references listed. There could also be more updated references from 2016 which could show how Smart TV is evolving. Emsroldan (talk) 02:06, 27 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Emsroldan: Nice addition to the page and use of the citation you found at the end of the sentence and in the reflist. Prof.bgreg (talk) 12:56, 1 October 2016 (UTC) [1][2]Reply

Suggestions edit

[1][2]

These articles provide information on how to protect Smart TV from hackers. There were rumors and cases of people who own Smart TVs being "spied" on. This could be useful to owners and a warning to people considering purchasing a Smart TV. This information could be added to the content "Security and privacy".

[3]

This articles provides information on a new feature of Smart TV. This feature makes payments more easier and convenient. This information could be added to the content "Market share" or perhaps a new content could be created.

[4]

Although there is already a content for Smart TV platforms, this article lists all of the platforms and could therefore be elaborated on. Emsroldan (talk) 04:57, 6 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Intelly edit

I deleted an edit by User:Shickorbob (Shickorbob) that added the claim that smart TVs are referred to as "intelly, a portmanteau of the words intelligent and telly." I think it's a great term, and I'd very much love for it to be used, but there is no evidence that it's actually being used for this. If anyone has citations to the contrary, please add them and let's reinstate this usage. -2607:F140:800:80:0:0:0:1D (talk) 00:46, 13 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
