Unfortunately, the breeds of some dogs in the story are wrong on that page. I would not suggest using it as a reliable source, but rather a very charming fan site. Never the less, it's been pointed out twice the Harpoon Bear's name is Sokkin, so chances are in such favour. (Psst; please remember to sign your comments! :P)(Foxpen 00:24, 16 May 2007 (UTC))

Sokkin (側近) means "aide/attendant" in Japanese, and it is a term used to call servants/minions/cronies in a different term other than "buka"(部下) or "teshita"(手下).MIZZKIE 10:19, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

A Bit of Info About Bears

The kinds of bears are not mentioned in the Wikipedia, but I would like to point out certain things about bears of Japan and in Ginga. There are two kinds of bears in Japan - the Black Bear of Honshū (the main island), and the Higuma/Ezo-higuma of Hokkaidō (the island where Hakurō lives). The Black Bear is called Tsuki no Wa-guma(月輪熊) (tsuki=moon, no=of, wa=ring, guma=bear(kuma)) due to its distinctive crescent-shaped marking on its chest. A Higuma is called Hokkaidō Brown Bear in English. Ezo is the old name of Hokkaidō.

Many Ginga fansites state that the bears are Grizzlies, but Grizzlies don't live in Japan (unless they break free from a zoo). They only live in North America, and they are bigger than Higumas (G:up to 680kg, H:up to 500kg).

Tsuki no Wa-guma - Ursus thibetanus

Ezo-higuma - Ursus arctos yesoensis

Grizzly - Ursus arctos horribilis

Akakabuto, Madara, Mosa, and most of the bears in Ginga are Tsuki no Wa-gumas. The harpooned bear and the "brown bear trio" are Higumas. Akakabuto, whoes name means "Red War Helmet" (赤兜) is a black bear dispite his brown fur. He is named that way because he is "red", and the "kabuto" part of his name comes from the fluff on his head. It SHOULD offer both versions, as in the manga it was a marten, and in the anime, a roving dog named Tin, who took Kurotora's eye. Changing it back. =P

-Yes, but this article draws on the ANIME, not the manga. The anime SHOWS Tin, the DOG, ripping Kuro's eye out. This is not a 'mistranslation,' this is simply a change from the manga to anime.

Those screencaps still aren't good evidence. It doesn't look like a dog, but it doesn't look like a marten either because Takahashi sucks at drawing non-canine animals. I've heard the translations in the anime are wrong, and that he is a Pine Marten by the name of Tin. He looks the same in the manga and anime. From what I've been able to understand, he was originally intended to be a Pine Marten, as stated in the manga.

Yes, he is a marten (it's a Japanese marten, but I have no clue if it's the same thing as a pine marten so I won't fuss about that part), but his name is not Tin. The word for marten in Japanese is "ten", and the translator(s) misheard it.MIZZKIE (talk) 06:45, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Smith's Breed

In the Meteor Gin character informational book, it declares Smith an English Setter, then, later, in a Ginga Densetsu Weed character informational book, it states that he is a French Spaniel mix. This is probably one of Yoshihiro's famous memory mistakes. It's more probable that he is a French Spaniel mix, however, this is not about Ginga Densetsu Weed, it's Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, and at the time of this anime/manga, where the new information did not exist, he was an English Setter, so it should list him as such here. --DameGreyWulf 21:45, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

To Dame: Which info book are you talking about? I have a info book called "Seiken Densetsu Meteor Gin" (huh, meteor indeed; nagareboshi is shooting star, and meteor is inseki), and it says that Smith is a Spaniel, but not specifically what Spaniel breed. To Dame: Hm, that's interesting. In that case I suppose English Setter could be left for GNG; though French Spaniel is much, much more correct. GB is an English Setter but Smith is not. I'm inclined to agree with the later book, the one Mizzkie has. EDIT: OK, I read the GDW discussion and see my comments aren't needed because the breed questions were already sorted out. (What I was going to say there, was that I’m glad the breeds listed with the bullets were confirmed because they’re correct. But then, I don’t even trust official sources 100% of the time; I can simply look at Hiro and know that he’s a Great Pyrenees. Same with Smith being some sort of spaniel—though it’s a very rare breed, French Spaniel is the best ID. He could possibly also have been an English Springer, at least the way he looked in GNG. But English Setter, especially purebred, is very unlikely. And Blue, if I remember him right, looks nothing like an Alaskan Malamute, so I would accept that he’s a Beauceron mix regardless of what I read anywhere. He is enough like one. Yeah, I'm the one who asked Yougurt to edit some of the information that she put on Gingasite, but we're not finished because my Dad's PC finally broke(wah). About the book; no, it's not the "Meteor Gin" book, but a newer version called "Ginga Densetsu WEED Mei-shoubu Retsuden". It was a (*cough* crappy) book about the fights that went on in the earlier WEED episodes, and it had some character bios. It's the latest character bios up to date, and it mentioned some dog breeds that most people don't know, which I suspect is Takahashi's work because I doubt the book's editors would care to look up rare breeds. Why?

Why are there all these tags on there? The article looks fine, aside from a neverending list of characters (the same information can be easily found on sites listed) and we've GOT experts writing it. All issues have been long since resolved about the fine details. MIZZKIE has provided image proof for some things, and is from Japan. MIZZKIE, is it possible for you to make a list of references from the informational books you've read? --DameGreyWulf (talk) 05:25, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

There are tags because the article has issues as noted by the tags. It is missing core MOS sections. The lead contains information not included elsewhere in the article, but the lead is supposed to be a summary of the article, not fresh information (see WP:LEAD). There is way too much plot/character info and not enough about the series as a whole, its publication, etc. AnmaFinotera (talk) 06:33, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

The Name
