S&WTN Railway

edit

My rail atlas shows the Abbey Foregate to Wellington section as the Shrewsbury & Wellington Joint Railway, operated on behalf of the LNWR and GWR. There's a partial explanation here. My impression is that the S&WTN became a joint operation after grouping. Any thoughts? Folks at 137 (talk) 22:24, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

This puzzled me too but I think I now understand it. There were two railways with one short joint section. They were the Shrewsbury and Birmingham Railway (initially independent but absorbed by the GWR in 1854) and the Stafford to Shrewsbury Line (owned by the Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Company but worked (from the start) by the LNWR. The joint section was the Shrewsbury and Wellington Joint Railway. When did it become a joint railway? The 1912 RCH map shows it as "GW and LNW joint" so it was obviously before 1923. I suspect it was a joint railway from the start. Does anyone have more information? Biscuittin (talk) 08:29, 4 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
As with Talk:Halesowen Railway, most of what you need is in:
In brief: the ten miles eastwards from Shrewsbury were built and owned jointly. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:00, 4 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
