"all the scuny team look like there in there early years"

With three homophones to choose from, you'd think he would have used the correct one at least once, if only by accident... -Grammaticus Repairo 06:56, 8 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ron Ashman edit

Hi - I've put up an article about Ron Ashman. I have plenty of details from his time with Norwich, but hardly any from his two spells as manager of Scunthorpe. If anyone has any details or information that they can add, please do so. Thanks. User:Demonicanglian

Importance Rating edit

I gave this a mid-rating, it seems to fulfil the requirements of giving specific details of Scunthorpe United, which is only a section of football, but seems more important than say, some of the smaller clubs or concepts of the game, so much so as not to be 'low' at any rate. Quality Rating edit

I've given this article a mid-rating, as it gives all the info people would want to know in a clear, concise manner. Trebor13 14:49, 27 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Scunthoprpe.gif edit

Image:Scunthoprpe.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:30, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think I've sorted this now. Can someone check? Da-rb 17:20, 7 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Neutrality edit

Is there a reason for the neutrality tag? Shouldn't there be a message on here by the OP? Da-rb (talk) 22:06, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

The article is largely negative. There is too much emthasis on the team's misfortunes and there is a general level of informal tone which is predominantly negative. Tom Green (talk) 18:04, 23 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Not being harsh here, but could you indicate which bits predominantly so the users know where to focus their attention? Da-rb (talk) 18:36, 23 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Many, many sentences and statements end with a negativity. This is so obviously the work of a rival fan it is unbelievable. Tom Green (talk) 20:53, 23 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

This appears to be a habit of yours thomas as you have posted similar on the 'Scunthorpe' site. This maybe your home town and the club that you support but you have to accept the good with the bad, even (especially more so) if the the good isn't forthcoming. Perhaps, because it isn't there? Wikipedia isn't there to present a pro-bias, just how people report it as long as such posts are valid. Just because you don't like such comments, doesn't mean they should be criticied. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.252.226.217 (talk) 16:05, 5 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

History edit

The history section suffers from chronic "recentism". The first 90 years of the club's existence is summarised in three lines! --Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 06:20, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pressman edit

Can someone remover Pressman from the Team, he was only called up due to a goal keeping crisis and should not be considered a proper player. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.70.65.131 (talk) 17:55, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I know what you're saying, but he was registered last year prior to the Plymouth away game in December and he's registered again this year. He's a player, simple as. Da-rb (talk) 10:28, 16 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Notable Former Players edit

This list has been added to alot recently, does Kelly Youga really constitute this status, playing for us for about 5 months? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.78.81.248 (talk) 22:43, 23 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Does this article need a update edit

Scunthorpe will now be playing in the fourth most watched league in the world, yet the article does not give much information about the club, such as the history, which is summed up in about a paragraph. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.225.171.215 (talk) 18:56, 25 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Rivalry edit

What are the rival teams of Scunthorpe United?Everton FC (talk) 16:09, 30 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Doncaster Rovers FC definitely are: however, the article states they do not play in the same league, which is not true: they played a league game today (24-11-12). This game is referred to as a derby game: cf., http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1268538/Doncaster-4-Scunthorpe-3-Martis-late-sinks-Iron-derby-thriller.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.96.118.92 (talk) 17:09, 24 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

List of former players edit

Having fashioned a list of notable players based on international appearances, I have moved the remaining listing below from the main article as they appear somewhat indiscriminate. Perhaps they should be included in a List of Scunthorpe United F.C. players with some clear criteria for inclusion? (See, for example, the List of Crewe Alexandra F.C. players -"players who have played 100 or more first-class matches for the club ... or have made significant contributions to the club's history.") Paul W (talk) 18:21, 8 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Several former United players have become managers, including:

Other notable former players include:

  • Jack Brownsword – According to Sir Stanley Matthews, the best uncapped full-back, who played 597 games for United, scored numerous penalties (50 goals) and continued with the club following his retirement as a player
  • Barrie Thomas – A centre forward who scored a club record 30 goals in 22 league games in Division 2, before being sold in mid-season to Newcastle United
  • Jack Haigh – the leading member of Scunthorpe's team throughout the 1950s, winning promotion to Division 2 in 1958 as the last winners of the Third Division North, before Divisions 3 and 4 were created
  • Charlie Lemons - Played in 1921.
  • Paul Longden – Second longest serving player. 455 appearances from 1982 to 1993

More recently successful players include:
