Someone might want to separate out SavitriBai's husband to have his own article! I don't have time right now, though.--Lizzard (talk) 17:44, 15 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

As of 06-Mar-2022, in the "Early Life" section, her year of birth is mentioned as 1827, where in the first para it is mentioned as 1831. Which one is correct? It has to be uniform throughout the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.114.211.74 (talk) 07:15, 6 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Adopted children? Poorly sourced article.

edit

The article is poorly sourced in genera. It mentions different adopted children in different sections. Please clarify.Gaff (talk) 17:31, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Shame on Savitribai Phule Pune University

edit

Savitribai's name has been given to the prestigious Pune University. The University also has department devoted to life and works of Jyotiba Phule and yet you have this pathetic article. couldn't anyone from the department contribute to the article ? What about the politicians who fought to get the University name changed? Can't they get their more cerebral minions to do anything about the article ? It is just a shameful situation. Sad really !Jonathansammy (talk) 14:13, 6 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Can you see this, for example? She is often relegated to second-tier by sources (compared to her husband) but there are some out there and I've been meaning to return to this article. - Sitush (talk) 20:07, 6 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Sitush. Unfortunately, the author has been lazy in checking her facts. For example, it was the bubonic plague that struck Pune and Bombay in 1897 and killed Savitribai and not cholera. After finding these mistakes, the author loses credibility in my eyes. Once again, thanks for the information.Jonathansammy (talk) 14:07, 7 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Savitribai was not born in Naigaon near Mumbai, she was born in Naigaon, Satara. Also, bubonic plague striking Nallasopara seems incorrect, the plague stuck Pune as far as I can see. - Pranab.salian (talk) 09:35, 3 January 2017 (IST) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.199.136.237 (talk)

and wear simple red sarees and had to lead a very austere life with little joy.[6] corrected:and wear simple white sarees and had to lead a very austere life with little joy. Please change the word in "red" in the above sentence as indian widows wear white sarees .The colour red signifies auspiciousness in marriage in india.--Ms.bhuddimaan (talk) 15:29, 3 January 2017 (UTC)http://daily.bhaskar.com/news/JM-why-widows-wear-white-2089623.htmlMs.bhuddimaan (talk) 15:29, 3 January 2017 (UTC) Ms.bhuddimaan (talk) 15:29, 3 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Marathi widows, particularly brahmin widows, used to wear a red or Maroon sari made out of coarse cotton unlike widows in Northern India. It is quite possible that South Indian widows wore red too but I am not sure about that. Thanks.Jonathansammy (talk) 14:49, 4 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

low quality sources

edit

There is so much literature available on Savitribai Phule and Jyotiba Phule. So many biographies written by Western and Indian academicians in English and in Marathi. Yet we are using articles from newspapers like "financial express" , "the Hindu", "India today", etc., written by uneducated/biased "journalists" who distort facts based on their agenda. Instead of using high quality academic sources , we are using a 23 year old college dropout like Divya Kandukuri.[1] Not making an "argumentum ad hominem" on Kandukuri but there is so much material available on the Phule family that using news articles for Phule's life is like using news articles to write about Shivaji's life.
