Discussion on Twitter edit

@SeoR an FYI that Sarah has raised some of the recent additions as not very representative of her work/career now here. Smirkybec (talk) 15:28, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi Smirkybec, I will have a look - I mostly avoid Twitter like the plague, but there's good stuff there too, of course. I simply noticed, while checking links re. a school article, that this article did not use its existing cites fully, and as I recall, I simply added in a couple of points from 1 or 2 cites - secondary school (no issue, should be there, but yes, long ago), spouse (basic for a bio) and day job (that does date sometimes, naturally) as of that citation. I was not looking for new material, but of course it would be wonderful if the article could be updated. If the subject (I don't know them, though maybe we passed each other at a con) has good materials we should use, I think we'd all be delighted, and if useful, I'm happy to reach out, avoiding WP:COI issues, etc. Must touch base on 1-2 other things too - NMI and other museums and orgs (I did a quick starter article on the new Library director for the 8th March), and Dublin streets / monopoly; had a busy period, some weeks remote. SeoR (talk) 16:18, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
If she follows up with me, I can work on integrating/updating info that we can find the citations for. Thanks so much! Smirkybec (talk) 16:22, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Tagging @Antiqueight in as well, seeing as she started the article. Smirkybec (talk) 16:23, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
+1. Just checking there, so those small updates were from a nice profile by the Examiner, but from 2014. If there is a more recent profile, we can use it to take the article past its current 2017-2019 horizon; I will search for same (I think last time did not throw up anything very recent, but I will dig deeper). Meantime, I will qualify language. Wonderful if Antiqueight can add anything also. SeoR (talk) 16:24, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
This is why I like dead writers - they've stopped producing new stuff (mostly)!! I have a couple of other people to update as well but I'm very happy if anyone else can update anyone I've started. But I'll see if I can give it a go today and tomorrow while I remember. ☕ Antiqueight chatter 18:59, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, and good to see you about! I've added a bit. There was nothing really wrong, and there seems to be a coverage gap 2020-2022, but the article improves. SeoR (talk) 21:38, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
OK, got a friend to check Twitter, and the note apparently mentioned "inaccurate" and a concern about the personal life section. Not sure what the inaccuracy concern was, but we're definitely more complete, correct and current now, and the (minimal and regular) personal life points were accurate per sources at their dates. It could be that something has changed, as last data is 2019, so I've "as of" tagged the few points in that section. Any further information very welcome, from any solid source, and of course, as ever, if we could secure a nice current photo... SeoR (talk) 22:15, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Smirkybec As often happens, others have lent a hand too - nice. On one point, if there is contact with the subject, would they have any references for a collection of poetry they co-edited in the early 2010s, "Bare Hands (Anthology)" or similar? It does not seem to have been lodged in TCD or the National Library, but I see notes of launch events in Google. Thanks, SeoR (talk) 13:11, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for all your work on this, SeoR! I'll see if I can scare something up this evening. Smirkybec (talk) 15:21, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! SeoR (talk) 15:48, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Just to mention, Bare Hands is probably OK, but now if we could have something on festivals - I know Ms Griffin has featured at some... I will get back to this one last time later tonight, then the winds of normal editing can take it peacefully onwards... It's been an interesting blitz. SeoR (talk) 21:35, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Editing on personal detail edit

Based on WP:LOWPROFILE, some personal details are being removed from the article. Smirkybec (talk) 18:15, 23 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Spoken word and New York edit

Where did the bits about the spoken word performances go? Those events were big back in the day. The scene largely died later but Griffin was even sent by the department to NY to perform, which is shurely notable? 193.181.252.77 (talk) 09:33, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

The reasons I removed that section was the citations were on that primary source side of things, and due to the undue weight it was giving to a very early part of her career. As you can see above, I'm citing WP:LOWPROFILE, for a relatively low profile Irish author the level of detail drawing on primary and borderline secondary sources was going into too much detail. Smirkybec (talk) 10:26, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Further to that, on review to ensure encyclopedic balance, it was clear that that part of the career did not continue; and one trip with a State agency does not a career path make either, though it is a form of recognition. If you were a contributor of information to the article, we are grateful for all inputs - and please, do continue - but you need to be clear that other editors will in turn work with all materials, and may need to put things in perspective, all the more so as more accumulates, and also with respect to the points which make the subject of a biography, for example, most notable. Background can help, but not in excess. Thanks, SeoR (talk) 14:04, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Got it. Thanks for explainin. 193.181.252.77 (talk) 18:05, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

BLP sensitivity edit

I appreciate that a great deal of work was done on the earlier version of this page, but the subject has indicated that there were several inaccuracies and material inappropriate to their notability. As editors we may take an article subject's wishes into account Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons and I strongly believe we should do so here, even though that means removing work by editors who were acting in good faith and who did considerable research. JimHolden (talk) 16:35, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

There is strange stuff happenin around this article. When and where was this claim of problems made? Please specify the supposed inaccuracies. People do not edit their own articles, see WP:COI. Are you an Administrator or Bureaucrat? 193.181.252.77 (talk) 18:04, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
The subject contacted me to express concern and I made edits in accordance with the guidelines:
Biographies of living persons ("BLPs") must be written conservatively and with regard for the subject's privacy.
When writing about a person noteworthy only for one or two events, including every detail can lead to problems—even when the material is well sourced. When in doubt, biographies should be pared back to a version that is completely sourced, neutral, and on-topic.
Also: Editors should make every effort to act with kindness toward the subjects of biographical material when the subjects arrive to express concern.
The subject is very clear on her preference for my edit, which removes personal information in favour of a focus on her works and their reception.
JimHolden (talk) 18:18, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Editors may take an article subject's wishes into account, and regularly do in cases of borderline notability. See Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons for more. JimHolden (talk) 18:21, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I would point out that while a company cannot dictate what is contained in their article, it is different in the case of biographies of living people, and when a reasonable request is made with sound reasoning, Wikipedians should try to accomodate. Smirkybec (talk) 20:51, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
