Pacitto's ice cream parlour edit

I am very disappointed that the information about the Pacitto's ice cream parlour has been removed. It was most certainly not an advertisement, but information and background about one of the town's most famous businesses.

Nonsense; It is one of the most transparent pieces of advertising on Wikipedia. It is completely inappropriate. Pacitto's isn't famous enough to warrant mention. Are we to mention all the shops?

But Pacitto's "lemon top" ice creams are one of the few distinctive things about the town, causing comment between non-Redcar people. They're not particularly nice.

Of course a town article shouldn't mention all the shops, but local spots of interest should not be excluded because they happen to be a commercial business. I would say that Pacitto's is as iconic a shop in Redcar as Harrods is in London. It is interesting from many points of view: how immigrants have fared in this very uni-cultural town, the rise and decline of Redcar as a seaside resort, its role as a women's meeting place, from a food history point of view (the frothy cofee, traditional ice creams, Temperance Bar sign, etc). In fact, I think it should have its own page!

It's not quite that notable! I think it should be included though, however, a source needs to be provided which dicatates notability and accuracy. Computerjoe's talk 14:31, 13 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

The BBC did a spot on regional TV (YTV) about Redcar. And the main thing they mentioned was those damnable "lemon top" icecreams !!! 82.38.57.43 (talk) 17:34, 2 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I love lemon-tops and when I go there to see family the idea of buying one always crosses my mind. The fish cakes from the fish and chip shop across the railway footbridge are also great, but probably not as well known! --Another berean (talk) 15:45, 5 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Tourism Section edit

I think this needs a tourism section, however I cannot create one as I can't do it and follow WP:V. Does anyone have a source on the history of the tourism industry, and it's current state? Computerjoe's talk 21:14, 7 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Roy Chubby Brown edit

Roy Chubby Brown was not from Redcar at all and I feel the point should be changed. He was born and lived over 4 miles away in Grangetown part of the Eston Urban district of which the Grangetown portion of the Eston Parish was within the parliamentary Borough of Middlesbrough (note this is not the same as a County Borough or Municipal borough) and any remarks to his hometown are in refernce to Middlesbrough as he actually mentions 'Middlesbrough' in one of his frequently used jokes. It can be questioned whether his hometown was Middlesbrough but it definateley wasnt Redcar so it is more appropriate to use Grangetown.

I don't know why anyone would want to claim to share a hometown with that disgusting, racist, sexist, xenophobic creature anyway. People like Brown are better off forgotten about, rather than immortalised on Wikipedia. – Dyolf87 (talk) 11:07, 29 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Map edit

The location of Redcar on the map is completely wrong. The point on the map actually pinpoints Whitby which is like 30 miles away. Redcar is actually on the very coast, a few miles south of where the Tees opens up to the North Sea. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.4.10.9 (talkcontribs) 12:03, 3 December 2006 (UTC).Reply

The derivation of the name Redcar edit

I find the derivation of the name Redcar from (Reed-Scar) a little suspicious as this means reed cliff if Scarborough is anything to go by. Scarborough allegedly comes from scar[cliff] barrow[hill]. To my mind derivation from 'Reed-Carr' meaning reed-marsh is more reasonable as the area is very flat and low-lying. Carr being a name for water-logged/marshy areas. But then what do I know!. I am aware that some of Coatham rocks are known as scars. I have a suspicion that the given derivation resulted from some mishievious local misinformation. Is there any documentary evidence to support the claim? JY --82.47.167.114 14:49, 17 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Seems odd I know but there are a few references throughout the town to 'scars' including street names! Cls14 22:19, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have put the 2 different deffinitions given by penguin book of place names i think these are more likely as the first know spelling of redcar has a K in it —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.0.52.238 (talk) 20:17, 19 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

History edit

I find it hard to accept that Redcar emerged full formed 'as a fishing town in the 1300s' when by 1800 it was still two rows of houses. --JohnYeadon 21:39, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Redcar Pier edit

How was it that the landing stage of Redcar pier was damaged (by the SS Cochrane) in 1855, eleven years before plans for the pier were even drawn up. I don't know what the correct date is 1885, 1895??? --JohnYeadon 21:39, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Rewriting edit

Starting to rewrite article to a good standard at User:Computerjoe/Redcar. Computerjoe's talk 22:42, 16 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Photograph of 'Redcar town centre' edit

This photograph is not what I think of as Redcar town centre, it would be better off named 'Bog Island'. The photo used to be captioned 'Redcar sea front'! 82.38.57.43 (talk) 16:39, 21 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Population edit

SOMEONE KEEPS CHANGING THE POPULATION OF REDCAR from 90926 which is the correct population of the 2001 census if someone disagrees I will send them copy —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.0.52.238 (talk) 20:41, 19 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

The reason for it been reverted is that you have not supplied any source for the information change. Provide a source reference here for the higher figure so that it can be evaluated, though remember we are not talking about the Redcar and Cleveland area of which Redcar is just a part. as i said if anyone wanted me to send them the correct infomation i would. i think it is shocking that you are giving completly false and unbacked information no where does it say that population is 30k+ in the cencus as stated on the profile page —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.0.52.238 (talk) 11:26, 14 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

The figure in the reference you quote is for the parliamentary constituency of Redcar which as far as I can see extends outside of Redcar itself. Do the wards quoted make up the whole of the constituency or are there some other areas this covers.? Keith D (talk) 14:58, 14 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Marske-by-the-Sea etc is part of the constituency. Computerjoe's talk 19:30, 3 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

redcar is seperate all the other wards come under east cleveland —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thatboy80 (talkcontribs) 02:22, 7 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Redcar Bears edit

The Redcar Bears are'nt actually located in the Town of Redcar. South Tees Motorsports is in Southbank which, although part of Redcar & Cleveland for administrative purposes, does not form part of the 'Town' of Redcar. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.7.237.113 (talk) 21:14, 25 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Redcar East edit

The result was merge Redcar East and Westfield into this article. -- Computerjoe's talk 20:48, 16 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Redcar East isn't a distinct settlement. I propose merging it into this article. Computerjoe's talk 19:23, 3 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

This seems like a good idea. There isn't all that much in Redcar East and I am sure the same content could safely become part of this article. I assume someone with local knowledge could check and integrate the data from there? If there are arguments for it to stay as a separate article (massive article expansion, assert it's a quite separate settlement etc??) it would be good to hear them but on the face of it the merge looks sensible. Best wishes DBaK (talk) 10:47, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
The Redcar East page has been going about two and a half years now and it only contains two sentences of any real content. Neglecting the Redcar and Cleveland Borough template, how many pages actually link to it - none! I think it can be reabsorbed back into the Redcar page without any issues - it is geographically part of Redcar anyway. The same argument goes double for Teesville and for Westfield. Of course if things did change and enough content appear then this decision(s) can be reversed. Coatham and Dormanstown however easily justify their existance. Stuffed cat (talk) 19:08, 13 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'll do this next week. Teesville might be better off with Eston. Computerjoe's talk 00:19, 14 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Inappropriate material tag edit

Can someone explain what they consider inappropriate material in the article for the tag to be present? Keith D (talk) 00:07, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well, here's the diff - you might want to ask Computerjoe about it - I know that he has quite strong views on this article as we've talked about it before. I'd be pleased to discuss it with other interested editors but my expertise in Redcar is at about the 0% level! :( DBaK (talk) 10:15, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, it was Computerjoe who ask for help with the article, so I have started to do some edits and just wanted to know what the specific problems that prompted the tag. As for specific knowledge then I am with you at around the 0% level so someone with local knowledge will have to do the fill in and referencing. Keith D (talk) 11:36, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Keith. Frankly I don't know, just some content was completely obscure. I will try to do some referencing, but I'm not good at finding them to be honest. I do have local knowledge though so I will chip in next week. Computerjoe's talk 17:23, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Keith D's review from my talk page edit

User:Keith D helpfully posted this on my talk page.

  • Lead
    • Population figure needs referencing and mentioning in rest of article.
    • In lead wikilink ward.
    • In the lead the use of 6 wards is confusing as the town appears to consist of only 4 wards according to Governance section, 2 being suburbs but not part of the town.
    • Lead needs expanding to summarise whole of article as per WP:LEAD.
    • Lead indicates "Middlesbrough to Redcar Railway" while history has "Middlesbrough and Redcar Railway" which is correct? Suggest wikilink to article covering this.
  • History
    • Section is totally unreferenced.
    • Last sentence on Racecourse does not make sense why would building a racecourse bring prosperity as a seaside town?
  • The section on the Zetland lifeboat seems to be very short and out of place and probably could be combined with the later reference in Landmarks.
  • Redcar and Coatham piers
    • The bits on Coatham pier are probably in the wrong article, especially as the Coatham article does not even mention a pier. Suggest that the detail be moved there with just a passing reference here.
    • May be I am confused as the second paragraph on the piers alludes to events in the first paragraph which I thought referred to Coatham pier. These paragraphs need clarifying.
  • Governance
    • Apart from the councillors is again unreferenced.
    • When did it become a unitary authority?
    • The paragraph starting "Politically ..." does not mention what seat the town is in.
    • he paragraph starting "Politically ..." indicates safe-labour seat but the councillors tend to be predominantly Lib-Dem need to explain why this is or loose the statement.
  • Geography needs expanding, especially as we have merged in articles and now have no details on the areas, like where they are.
  • Economy - references lacking again.
  • Tourism, leisure and amenities
    • Largely unreferenced.
    • Wikilink to Burniston goes to a village not a family, probably just remove the link.
    • Think we need to see if we can get something for red-link for howles - possibly from wikidictionary.
    • Parks - are they green spaces or amusement type parks as it would seam that the former would not employ hundreds of people.
    • Redcar pier date appears to contradict "Redcar and Coatham piers" section.
    • May be the paragraph on Atonement needs combining with the section "Cultural references" rather than split the detail.
  • Nightlift
    • Needs updating as 2006 is no longer "quite recently".
    • Unreferenced.
    • Need to define what "established haunts" are. Are they pubs, nightclubs, restaraunts or what?
  • Landmarks
    • Should be rewritten in prose rather than bullet list.
    • May be give links to the Images of England database entries for the listed buildings using the {{IoE}} template, probably as a reference.
  • Transport
    • Section unreferenced.
    • British Steel workers is mentioned but there was no mention of British Steel in the Economy section. Is is one of the places mentioned there?
    • Roads & bus seem to be under represented and could do with expansion.
    • As it is on the coast is there any sea transport that needs mentioning?
    • The last sentence on cables looks out of place but cannot see where else to put it as looks interesting information that need retaining.
  • Education, a little thin and unreferenced.
  • Sport - seems to be rather under-represented as speedway cannot be the only sport in Redcar, we previously had a mention of a race course so where is it?
  • Notable people - may be worth starting a Notable people from Redcar article and add as a main to the section.

Hopefully these will point you in the right direction to improving the article, if you want any help give me a shout, though I will be away for a fortnight after next week. Keith D (talk) 21:51, 19 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
