Article says about 100 of these films remain. The curator of the black cast films at the Hyattsville branch of the Prince George's County Memorial Library System, Kent Moore, claims they have between 200 to 250 black cast films. He says many of them are short films. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ksain61 (talkcontribs) 15:32, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Didn't the idea of "race music" predate this?--Pharos 10:28, 13 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

The music itself almost certainly predated it, but the term (which redirects to African American music) probably came along at the same time. A cursory Google search suggests that the term "race records" was most common during the twenties and thirties, losing currency after WWII. This obviously parallels the race movie genre. In the case of music, however, it seems to have been a case of re-labeling, whereas in the case of films, it was an actual shift in genre. I bet this book would throw some light on the issue. And what is the connection to blaxploitation? gbrandt 14:01, 13 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

That's been puzzling me as well. Certainly race films must have influenced blaxploitation, but I can't say how profoundly. However, there is a gap of more than three decades between the decline of one and the rise of the other. The latest race movies are from the mid-forties, and all famous race movies are from before 1940. The earliest blacksploitation films date from 1968. We really need an article on African American cinema. Bhumiya/Talk 05:10, 7 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Birth of a Race edit

I haven't seen The Birth of a Race, but from the documentation I've found, it doesn't sound like a race movie. Tempshill 16:18, 22 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think there are two films by the same name. Bhumiya (said/done) 07:56, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

The other kind of race movie? edit

If a "race movie" is a movie with a cast of African descent, then what are Days of Thunder and Talladega Nights? --Damian Yerrick (talk | stalk) 01:54, 13 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

More Neutral Title edit

I agree with Damian Yerrick -- the term is useless. I'd prefer a more neutral title.

Financing and Production edit

This doesn't really explain why race films ended. Maybe there was more than the law case as a reason.--Parkwells 23:08, 10 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

In criticizing The Crosby Show, were they ignoring how many middle and upper class black families there were?--Parkwells 23:10, 10 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
