Talk:Portal axle

HMMWV edit

I don't think the HMMWV should be on the list of trucks that use a portal gear. I'm pretty sure the Hummers use a jointed axle, with a joint in the center of the wheel and a joint up in the body of the truck. There aren't any gears, the hummer just has ground clearance because it doesn't have a straight axle that connects a set of tires. Each wheel has it's own axle. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.254.124.99 (talk) 05:45, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I wondered about this inclusion as well, given the low attachment point on the hub. However, while these may not be quite worthy as proper references, check out:

I am the "bloggish owner" (heh) that you cite. Indeed, the HMMWV uses a portal axle. We call it a "geared hub" - q.v. feature list at AM General corporate site

Proposed move edit

This topic is referred to in the article as "portal axle", which is generally the preferred term, as far as I can see. Shouldn't this page be moved to portal axle? ENeville 23:15, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sounds good to me. Don't think its a big issue either way though. Tmaull 16:16, 4 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

First introduced by... edit

Would be interesting to know who invented the portal gear... The first vehicle I know that incorporated this technology was the Unimog, but that's my German POV... 80.128.201.133 (talk) 09:55, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Geared hubs edit

Should we include geared hubs here too, i.e. epicyclic hub gearboxes that reduce speed and increase torque, but that don't have the suspension offset of the full portal? An example would be the Alvis FV600 series, such as the Stollie. Andy Dingley (talk) 19:14, 11 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Or the similar-but-different geared axles used on (London) Talbot ambulances to lower the body? Mr Larrington (talk) 18:56, 12 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Blacklisted Links Found on the Main Page edit

Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request its removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.

Below is a list of links that were found on the main page:

Proposed merge with Portal Gear Lift edit

Sources seem to prefer the term "portal axle" over "portal gear lift". signed, Rosguill talk 19:46, 20 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
