Death edit

Catholic Encyclopedia November 16 seems to be an error. J.N.D. Kelly Oxford Dictionary of Popes, Salvador Miranda [1], the page of Diocese of Rome [2] and Encyclopedia Britannica [3] give November 19. Kalev Kask 15:52, 22 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sainthood edit

From looking at the of Popes, it appears he is the first Pope to also not be canonized as a saint. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jepace (talkcontribs) 22:57, 6 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Dante's "mistake" edit

In § Death and Legacy, we read:

Dante placed Anastasius II in the sixth circle of hell: "Anastasio papa guardo, lo qual trasse Fotin de la via dritta" ("I guard Pope Anastasius, he whom Photinus drew from the straight path"). However, modern Dante scholars consider this to be a mistake: the person Dante intended to put at that level was the Byzantine emperor of the time, Anastasius I.

The latter statement is untenable: if Dante had indeed intended to place the Byantine Emperor Anastasius I in the burning tomb in the 6th circle, then why did he clearly name him "Pope": "Anastasio papa" ? Yet we have three references given to support this ludicrous statement; what do they actually say? Surely not this illogic! yoyo (talk) 12:05, 13 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • The first source links directly to the page that explains the mistake. The second includes the quotation. So: you can read those, for a start. 100.40.76.31 (talk) 18:26, 7 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
