Indonesia making it clear that it is not adequately equipped to patrol the Strait??? edit

This sentence had a cite, yet when I read the cite I find only a claim by an individual, not an official statement from the government. The person making the claim works for an NGO, which can not be taken to represent the country. For this sort of claim I'd expect cite from a government ministry or a navy spokesperson at the very least.

I think the sentence should be reworded, maybe even taken out, but I am not sure yet how to reword it. Also off-topic, reference 13 goes to a deadlink. Should it be removed? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.139.48.16 (talk) 12:49, 22 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

To Do edit

  1. "History" section needs content.
  2. "Modern piracy" section needs content.
  3. Need better and more sources. There are probably many books on Southeast Asian history or Melaccan history that have a lot of information on piracy in the Malaccan Strait.
  4. Pictures?
  5. A list of historically prominent pirates would be nice. (List needs to be populated though)
  6. Categorisation - to be done after the article moves to its own article space.

Added documentary photo of seaman during anti-pirate training in the Straits of Malacca. Hopefully, the photo's encyclopedic value outweighs the poor image quality.--Fishdecoy 04:26, 28 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've crossed out the request for pictures on this task list, as there are now two, as opposed to none at all, when I first created the article. Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 20:22, 29 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dubious rationale for increased piracy edit

The fall of Suharto's authoritarian regime, resulting in a weak central Indonesia government, & lack of coordination among Singapore/Malaysia/Indonesia are stronger contributing factors than terrorism as the catalyst for increased piracy in the Straits of Malacca. Piracy is a "business affair", abeit illegal - currently, the profits strongly outweigh the risks.--Confuzion 01:25, 30 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Liang Dao Ming edit

Hi Hong Qi Gong, I have just built a page about the pirates (梁道明 & 陈祖義) in the Strait of Malacca, they are interlink with your Piracy in the Strait of Malacca. Liang Dao Ming

Good job. I've started a section called "Prominent pirates in the Strait of Malacca" and added him in. --- Hong Qi Gong 20:27, 30 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re: Good, maybe we can help to add some points in both pages. L joo 20:32, 30 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Found another source on historic piracy edit

I found and added (in the External links section) another source on historic piracy in the Malacca Straits[1]. That page is not entirely devoted to piracy in the Malacca Straits, but it does spend a few paragraphs talking about it, from the perspective of how the Mongols and the Chinese were involved. I haven't added content to the article from this source yet. But I just thought I'd mention it here for anybody who wants to take a look at it and add content to the article from the source. Good photo edit

The recent photo illustration added by Spencer adds considerably to the quality of this article:

Suspected pirates

Title edit

Editors are encouraged to weigh in on the page title discussion here on piracy in the Gulf of Aden area. Per WP:NAMINGCRITERIA's clause on title consistency, the title of that page could affect the title of this page and vice versa. That page's title could possibly be moved to "Piracy in the Gulf of Aden" in accordance with this and other similar page titles (e.g. Piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, Piracy in the Persian Gulf, Piracy on Falcon Lake), or instead this page title may have to be moved to "Indonesian piracy" ("The title is consistent with the pattern of similar articles' titles").
