Species status edit
Given that we follow IOC, which is lumpy when it comes to this taxon, and the IUCN is rather splitty, is it accurate to describe it as critically endangered? That's referring to the Stewart Island population, not the wider taxon as a whole? Maybe we need a "see text" in the taxobox? Sabine's Sunbird talk 20:19, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
Merger proposal edit
As the project standard for species and subspecies names is the IOC, it is proposed that Northern red-breasted plover and Southern red-breasted plover be merged into this article. Loopy30 (talk) 15:03, 19 June 2019 (UTC)

New Zealand plover → New Zealand dotterel – I believe it's worth having a discussion about the name of this article. In New Zealand, the name New Zealand plover is seldom used compared to New Zealand dotterel. Various news sources,[1][2], scientific literature,[3][4] as well as the Department of Conservation,[5] and OSNZ,[6] refer to the species as New Zealand dotterel. I also make the note that Wikiproject Birds states that "Wikipedia bird article titles may diverge from the IOC list when the most common name in reliable sources is different from the IOC name." In addition, I would like to highlight the recent change of the Kererū's article name from its IOC name, so this would not be an unprecedented move.

- Support While I hope that one day the usage of the Māori name (tūturiwhatu) will be prevalent enough that the article can be renamed to that, the bird in question is definitely far more commonly referred to as a dotterel than a plover. The New Zealand dotterel (Charadrius obscurus) is a species of shorebird found only in certain areas of New Zealand. The southern subspecies (C. o. obscurus) is considered critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, with only 60 to 80 mature individuals remaining in 2017. Correct the taxonomy reference in "Taxonomy and systematics" edit
Hello, this is a suggestion to correct the taxonomy reference. There is an earlier article by Barth et al. (2013) that found the relationship that is cited here as an article from 2015. The correct text/reference is:
A 2013 study determined that its closest relatives are two other New Zealand plovers, the wrybill, which was found to be in the Charadrius CRD II clade, and the double-banded plover.[1]
