Untitled edit

I changed my article yesterday, in order to make it more as an encyclopedia than a personal essay. Please advice me anything which would be useful to make it more suitable according to Wikipedia criteria. I must underline that I am a native French speaker, this is why I used many French sources. However, this article has been fully writen by me and not by a computer. Moreover, everything I wrote comes from relevent and credible sources, I did not invent anything. Finally, I do not understand what is an orphan article (even after reading the explaination on your website), could you, please, tell me what can I do to remedy.

Thank you for your attention and your help.

--Marionrobyn (talk) 14:30, 12 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

First, It's not your article. Though you did create it, anybody can edit it and contribute anything to it. Nobody owns articles. Not even Jimmy Wales. Second, I'm glad, but some bits of it appear to be original research in a sense. The way that you connect two topics that don't have a reliable source to connect them is original research unless a reliable source is produced to say what you're attempting to portray. What an orphan means is that other pages link to this page. Tutelary (talk) 16:23, 12 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I would support renaming this page to 'Media and Gender Roles' or 'Media and Gender Perception'. I am of the opinion that the article is a little repetitive and would thus benefit from adding structure. I also believe that the subjects aren't clearly defined for my liking, we are talking about Women working in the media, Women's perception in the media, briefly about homosexuality. We maybe should split it in different parts with more evocative names (1.Traditional depiction, 2.Sexism, 2.1.Patriarchal views of masculinity, 3 Media Efforts, 3.1 From LGBT organisations -like Act Up-, 3.2.From Feminist Associations, 3.3.From Men's Right Association, 4.Controversy -declarations, View of Gender on Russian TV,..-, 5.A Changing landscape -Effects of women and LGBT journalists on the perceptions + Figures from a Think Tank. Let me know what you think of it. I can prepare a short draft.

Personal thinking of article edit

The article detailed explained the situation of women in the mass media. People should put more attention on building positive images for women on the social medias. According to the article, women are always been putting in a lower position so that the advertisement could achieve their aims. 'Housewife' is a common images for the women on the screens.

However, the title of the article is Media and gender. Gender is not only about women and media, i think author could add more information that related to the men. Not only women are meeting the problems with media effects, although women have more issues to discuss. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.62.206.151 (talk) 20:35, 25 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Peer Review for COMM 412 class: 1. Media and gender in the 20th century (magazine)

      - This sentence sounds weird: “The readers of the magazine represented a new generation that had gone to college, were often on the pill, and had high expectations of the world”.
      - Rephrase it: “Victoria Secret magazines are guilty of hiding their models' faces by their own hair or shadows. This is a problem because it dehumanizes the model, and makes that model to be seen only as an object for sale, like the products”. Instead: Victoria Secret magazines hide models’ faces by their own hair, shadows or simply leaving their faces out of the image. This is problematic because it dehumanizes the model; categorizing them as objects for sale.

2. Median and gender in the 20th century (TV-shows).

      - This sound odd: “With the showing of The Bachelor, continuing on with its 18th season as of 2015, it seems like we are on a downhill climb away from females being stereotyped on TV shows”.
      - I don’t know if it is necessary this sentence: “On The Bachelor, men and women are seeking to find love the "traditional way," by going on live TV and falling in love with someone after only going on to four of the most extravagant dates ever with them and then being thrown back in to reality where they fight for what they had in paradise. "I'm a loser… what is so wrong with me that someone cannot love me for who I am?" wept Heather in 2002 during a tear-stained money shot found in every Bachelor elimination ceremony”.
      - I do not agree with this statement, I think you should look for other one: “How To Get Away With Murder is a show full of sexy and intriguing characters followed by confusing character relationships and murder mysteries”.

I have more personal thinking on this article.
As we can see in the header message, “the examples and perspectives in this article deal primarily with Western culture and do not represent a worldwide view of the subject.” To further attempt to resolve this issue, I suggest that our next step would be adding more contributions to the gender expectations sections to start, for there are varying gender expectations among different cultures that are significant in noting; it is wrong to assume that in every culture the gender expectations are the same, for this is not the case within historical divisions of labor, status, politics, and recognition pertaining to gender.
Here is useful link that we can use to get started with this section: https://hraf.yale.edu/ehc/summaries/gender#variation-in-gender-concepts YOLOpurple (talk) 18:39, 27 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion for Improvement to the Body Image Section edit

I think that the Body Image section could use some additions and improvements. I have suggestions on how to improve the article and this is what they would entail:

1. Body Image and TV advertisement: This section would discuss how seeing the same images on TV commercials over and over again has led to an increase of eating disorders, and an increase in negative body image. Another part of this section would be the idea of “The media entertains the idea of the thin ideal.” (Legenbauer). The idea of negative Body Image and connections to dieting would be addressed. I would also discuss the study that was conducted and the impact commercials have on participants who have eating disorders. [1]

2. Body Image and the “third” person: This section would include the idea that one reason women can develop such negative body image after seeing images of thin and beautiful women on TV, is because men see these same images and think of them as the ideal woman.I would also include a definition of Body Image. Another interesting idea is that gender and closeness (to the woman being observed) play a role when it comes to the “third person”. I would then discuss the study and how these roles have different effects on body image of the woman observed. [2]

3. Body Image and weight loss/health magazines: This section would talk about how eating disorders have become a more common issue among middle age women. Women look to weight loss magazines to stay in shape, and they are constantly seeing images of lean and very thin women, affecting their body image. I would end this section by discussing the study conducted and how these magazines tend to focus more on appearance than health. [3]

  • I am happy to see article improvements, but allow me a few comments. First, y'all need to remove cliches like "in today's society". There is no "today" in encyclopedic writing, and "society"--which society? (Typically, white middle-class US society...) In other words, globalize, and try NOT to focus exclusively on the US (I might just tag this article as such). Second, "media" is really waaaaaaaay to vague. That the article is titled "media and gender" is fine, that's general--but if you go on to cite specific points from specific articles and books, "the media" is too general, and it sounds like some Fox news commentator on Facebook. Really, there is no "the media" in that sense. Third, please don't cite textbooks--in Wikipedia parlance they count as tertiary sources. Secondary is good. Finally, I think I saw a few cases of argument/original research/synthesis--that is not what Wikipedia does. You can't argue a point here, or pull things together to make a case via inductive reasoning: that's original research, and while that is fine for your term paper, it's not for here. Stick to the sources, and if that's boring, well, sorry, but that's really what we do here--User:Shalor (Wiki Ed) can tell you all about it. User:Jagrif02, welcome aboard: hope y'all doing well in Louisville. Is the abortion clinic still open downtown? I got harassed by a couple of these hardcore anti-choice demonstrators there this spring, but I had a great time checking out the breweries downtown and the skate park. Nice place. Good luck with your class. Drmies (talk) 18:42, 25 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Hi Drmies! Thank you for offering feedback - that's super awesome of you, but then I already knew that you're a pretty cool cat ostrich. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:31, 25 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Drmies Thank you very much for your feedback! I appreciated your advice about not adding my original research to the article, and then to also be more specific when I refer to the media. I will definitely consider that when adding my contribution to the article. Volleyballer13 (talk) 00:41, 26 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • Sure thing. Being in the academic biz myself, it took me a long time to get used to this kind of writing. I think you should offer Jagrif02 a challenge: write up a WP:DYK and get on the front page--that's what I had my students do, and to prove it could be done I did it myself too, so have Jagrif get one on the front page, haha. My favorite from a student is still Ysleta Mission. Good luck! Drmies (talk) 01:15, 26 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

/* Masculinity */ edit

For this section, I wonder how other editors feel about these suggestions to expand on the paragraph that begins with Masculinity is the ideas of how men and boys should behave. Masculinity refers to the characteristics and societal ideas related to how men and boys should behave. Most societies socialize men and boys to assume that they are entitled to superiority in leadership, physicality, and intelligence among other factors. According to the hegemonic masculinity model, men who demonstrate power, strength, bravery, fearlessness, virility, competitiveness etc.. can assert their (supposed) superiority over women and consolidate their general position of dominance over them (physically, intellectually, and sexually).[1] Ridlmas8 (talk) 01:11, 16 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Expanding Section for Representation of non-binary characters edit

Hi y'all, I would like to expand this section and plan to include trans representation as well as non-binary info. Potentially going to add a subsection for "Trans and non-binary characters as plot devices for cisgender characters" to match with the subsection of "Female characters as plot devices for male characters" as there are sometimes similarities in these types of narratives. I may also try to develop a subsection about some of the controversies surrounding the portrayal of trans and non-binary characters by cisgender actors. Also planning to add to the "Effects on youth" section with a few sources about trans media representation. HS904679 (talk) 01:38, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

NPOV problem in the new section edit

In May, a student added a large section about "Gender Expectations in Pop Culture", which I recently abbreviated to "Gender expectations". This section has serious NPOV problems, including a complainy and arrogant tone about the subject matter and presenting controversial statements as unequivocal facts instead of study findings or attributed opinions. It, and some of its sources are questionable. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 13:29, 15 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Quick Gender Disparity Comment edit

I'm wondering if this quote is in need of a more recent statistic: "as of 2018 in the United States, 41.7% of the newsroom employees were women; the proportion of women journalists in online-only news organizations even reached 47.8%." I also think, if we are aiming for objectivity, we shouldn't just focus on US-centric statistics.
