The poet Walt Whitman, who was passionate about Opera, adored and admired Alboni. He was in agreement with all the European and American music critics that Alboni far surpassed Jenny Lind. Although plump Alboni was not surely a tragic actress, the unsourced statement about her "histrionic failure" in Norma appears to be incompatible for instance with Longfellow’s: "Alboni was sublime in Norma, last night," he wrote to his best friend Charles Sumner on 15 February 1853. "Would you had been with us, in our snug box." (quoted in Christoph Irmscher, Public Poet, Private Man: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow at 200, University of Massachusetts Press, 2009, p. 6.
