Opera News has published (May 2008 issue) a very good piece on Malin Hartelius as part of a series of articles on opera in Switzerland. She explains why she opted for a career as an ensemble singer at Zurich opera, which is a perfect fit for her. For example, keeping much of her singing local allows her to give her two school age children a stable home.

There are some reviews/interviews in Cleveland Ohio based papers that can be found on the Web. A video interview can be found on the Cool Cleveland website. The Swedish and German interviews give much more insight into her childhood.

If you can read Swedish, run a web search for Malin Hartelius that returns only Swedish postings. Smalenposten web site has some information on her childhood vocal activities and current performances in Vaxjo Sweden. Being totally at the mercy of machine translation, when it comes to Swedish, I can only state that She started singing popular music, in public, at a very early age.

I have made a very crude translation of two Malin Hartelius German interviews. She describes her first encounter with opera on television and singing in a popband. Her parents became concerned that she was hurting her voice and prompted her to take voice lessons. At first she studied both popular and classical voice. After choosing classical voice, she enrolled in a local opera school.

She appears to have an audience for her very perceptive thoughts on bringing up her two young children alone after her husband appears to have lost interest, in her, and the children. Her children always come first, yet she has established herself as a reliable singer by careful planning. Further she states that taking time for her children is good for her singing in the long run.

I have no talent when it comes to translation, so I am posting this "too brief" summary to encourage others to do a real translation. The Migros interview was used by a Swiss university as an entrance exam.

The Migros interview concentrates on child care issues while the Opernglas article concentrates on opera roles. There is a fair amount of overlap which is helpful as it presents some material twice in differing words.Jesse w knight 18:11, 29 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
