Gruenwald doesn't deserve this treatment edit

It's disturbing and POV that Gruenwald gets such trivial and negative treatment in this article. He was clearly a man of considerable substance (not to say, great personal courage) and would be given glowing testimonials if his narrative was something that suited Israel and made its founders look good. His article has an extremely abbreviated lede, and yet contains the ridiculous "amateur journalist and stamp collector". The trial of Kastner dragged on for 2 years (instead of the 4 days expected) because Gruenwald (or perhaps his lawyer, Tamir) trapped Kastner into lie after lie, particularly over the affadavit that saved the war-criminal and Jew-killer Becher from certain prosecution at Nuremberg.

eg Statement by Richard H. Gutman, January 1, 1961: "From the summer of 1945 to the summer of 1946 I was stationed as an intelligence and interrogation officer of the U.S. Army in Oberursel, Germany. ... One of the men I interrogated was Standartenfuhrer (S.S. Colonel) Kurt Becher... At the time of the attack against Poland he was under the leadership of Fegelein, a member of the Reiter S.S. which committed the worst excesses in occupied Warsaw. I remember that during the interrogation it came out that Becher had contracted venereal disease during the Polish campaign. ... Undoubtedly Becher knew much more than he was willing to tell and was directly involved in many different aspects of the "final solution" to the Jewish problem as envisaged by Hitler, Himmler, Eichmann, etc., than he would ever be willing to admit. But his constant reference to the fact that he was a "friend" of the Jews and that he knew they would vouch for him was too much for me to take I put him in solitary confinement for which he loudly thanked me because, as he put it, 'it gave me a chance to reflect on all the terrible things that had happened'. I finally escorted him by jeep to Nuremberg where I delivered him to the prison authorities.

"Shortly after I had delivered Kurt Becher, war criminal and leading S.S. officer on Himmler's staff I found that due to the intercession of Mr. Rudolf Kastner, Becher was enjoying a comfortable existence in the witness wing of the Nuremberg prison. ... I was shocked and couldn't believe it and went to see Kastner. ... When I said to Kastner that I didn't understand his loyalty and concern for a man like Becher he answered me, with a sentimental and faraway look in his eye, that when he once went into an S.S. office, he saw their belts hanging on the clothes rack. And on the belt buckles was inscribed the motto, `Meine Ehre ist True' - My Honor is Loyalty." (Hecht, Perfidy, p.182, reference #134). PRtalk 19:00, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

He gets neither a negative nor trivial treatment in this article. I used Hecht liberally in writing it. Jayjg (talk) 01:45, 7 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Which newspaper first published Gruenwald's charges? edit

  • Hebrew wiki says HaOlam Hazeh was the first paper to publish the accusations, not Herut. Can anyone check this? 79.176.8.207 (talk) 16:41, 13 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

more information about assisination? edit

  • The article rather abruptly mentions Kastner's assassination. Can a link or more information be provided? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.202.79.110 (talk) 00:50, 5 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hecht's Perfidy is Unreliable edit

We need better sources than Hecht. I was rather surprised by the ridiculous claim that Malkiel's brother was killed by the Nazis in 1944. Here's what Hecht writes in Perfidy:

"Among the executed were Rabbis Fabian Herschkowitz and Niklos Pehnes, and Professor Philip Greenwald, director of the Jewish Museum."

According to the Encyclopedia Judaica (entry for Grunvald, Philip), Philip survived the war and died in 1964. He was a well known figure in Budapest jewry- he was principle of the Gymnasia (=high school) and was curator/director of the Jewish Museum. A quick search will reveal that Fabian Herschkowitz (=Herskovits) survived the war as well. This is a very sloppy mistake. There is no excuse for Hecht declaring Philip Grunvald dead, when he was still very much a well known and active member of the community during the Kastner affair. I would also consider placing "citation needed" tags for every reliance on Perfidy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.186.243.21 (talk) 18:23, 6 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
