Splitting of article

edit

This article was formed by merging several articles without discussion. This is not a good idea firstly because these games have nothing to do with each other except having similar names (and lead character). The title of the article is also misleading, as it only covers a few of the Superman games that have been made and not all of them, as an article of this type should. I suggest restoring the individual articles and perhaps creating a new article with this one's name that actually discusses the history of Superman video games, if such an article has value. As I've said in your talk page, Wikipedia's stance on merging suggests that you be bold and perform the merging, so I'm pretty sure I'm in the right for doing so. As for the merit of the merging, liscensed games to my knowledge don't have the priviledge of being remade, and given the short lengths of these games don't really seem to justify having their own individual page (Hence being nothing more than a stub). Now, if you could make each of the articles on the games significantly longer in length, then I could see them as individual pages. Games like Superman Return are left alone because it's already lengthy on it's own. Now if it would make a difference, I could merge some of the other Superman games on here so it won't be as misleading as you put it. Antiyonder (talk) 06:54, 13 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, Wikipedia supports being bold, but I still think merging several articles without adding a merge tag and waiting for discussion is not a good idea. There has been more than a little bit of a to-do with television episodes and video game characters being merged without discussion, so it's probably not the best idea. (Though certainly allowable, as would being bold in putting them back.)
As to the value of the merge itself, as I stated, these games have nothing to do with each other besides the subject matter, so the Wikipedia really gains nothing by combining them here. The fact that the games are "short" is not reason enough to merge them.
Due to the questionable advantages to one page for disparate, unrelated games, I think the pages need to be put back the way they were. A page *could* exist such as List of Superman video games similar to List of Star Wars video games, but that is not what we have here. Rhindle The Red (talk) 14:01, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

so the Wikipedia really gains nothing by combining them here. The fact that the games are "short" is not reason enough to merge them.

To my understanding, many pages qualify for deletion because they are too short. Thus merging them prevents the chance that they would be deleted. Anyway, I'm not even saying the merge has to be permanent. If someone wants to expand info on the individual games, then I could see a separation. Antiyonder (talk) 18:47, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Personally, I think the article should be split up into separate pieces. The games are simply very different, and a person interested in, say, "Superman" on the Atari 2600, just doesn't give a fig about the fact there were also "Superman" games running on other consoles. I strongly support re-splitting the article for the same reasons as KevinOKeeffe gave above, retaining this one as an "overview" or parent, with {{mainarticle}} links beside brief summaries. If there are no objections, I may do this in the near future.
BTW, to the best of my knowledge, a short article doesn't necessarily mean that it'll be deleted. Stubs that have obvious "parent" articles and that are unlikely to grow beyond stub status (either because there's not enough material on that specific subtopic or because no-one's likely to do it in the forseeable future); they're likely to be merged back. However, that isn't the case here; only the "Death of Superman" section is at that status currently and that could be expanded if it had its own article.
And even if it doesn't get its own child article, the others certainly could- and should- because they're obviously distinct articles in their own right and still read as such.

No objections, so article has been unmerged (i.e. restored to the status it was at before, but keeping any changes and new bits added after the merge).
Short summaries covering each game remain here, so that this article can act as a good overview to the various games and put them in context- i.e. the best of both worlds.
I've also added brief summaries of the other Superman games that weren't mentioned here. Ubcule (talk) 13:13, 16 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
