Adding a "founding year" column

Howdy folks. The "developing schools" section gave me an idea: adding a "year founded" column for each school. It would fun and informative to be able to sort the schools by the years they opened. Is this a viable idea that others would support? Or would it introduce complications and controversies? Bryan Hopping ^T 07:31, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Go for it. Other lists, including List of medical schools in the United Kingdom and List of law schools in the United States, already have founding year listed. Just remember to add references for the dates. This way, we could get this article to FL status. --Scott Alter 22:02, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

I added the "established" column. This is the same terminology used by List of medical schools in the United Kingdom. There are still many dates missing. I got the dates from the schools' wikipedia pages, but references need to be added. Also, there may be a discussion about which dates should be used: established (founded) or first year of classes. Sortable table and state names

Former medical schools

Any interest in adding another section for former medical schools? I'm not sure how many articles there are on former schools, but one of the schools currently on the developing list is no longer in existence (Touro University College of Medicine). I think articles on medical schools no longer in existence should be listed somewhere, so why not here? Should a distinction be made between schools that have admitted students and those that have not (maybe in a comments field)? I'll move TouroMed to a new section and we can move it later if there are other suggestions. --Scott Alter 04:31, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

The Flexner report itself lists all of the medical schools that were open and surveyed from 1909-10. I did a quick search and found that the Council on Medical Education of the AMA published a report titled "Medical Colleges of the United States" every few years between the late 1800s and 1918. The report from 1918 was specifically titled "Medical Colleges of the United States and of Foreign Countries," and it can be viewed and downloaded as a PDF from Google Books here. It lists every past and present medical school (as of 1918) with information such as city, organization year, first graduating class year, extinction year, schools merged with, reason for closure if they were fraudulent. I think this information would be valuable for addition to this list, but it would require a lot of time to transcribe everything into a table. --Scott Alter 01:01, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Time is relative. When I made the EMS Responder by US State list, that took a lot of time to do the research. For something like this project and that, the only way to do it is one school/step at a time when time is available. JPINFV (talk) 06:21, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

And speaking of Emergency medical responder levels by U.S. state, do you remember that you started Talk:Emergency medical responder levels by U.S. state/draft just about 2 years ago! Yea... I remember that. I've been busy with finishing up grad school and now being destroyed in med school. What I need to do sometime over summer for the EMS list is go through and find out which states have/are adopting the new standards and nomenclature, but right now I'm focused on not failing neuro. I have started going through the historical and current medical schools from before 1918, and there were 105 existing and 347 extinct at that time. Should the former medical schools be put in this article, or started on a new one? I think it would be nice to have them all in one article to make page searching easier, and many current medical schools have absorbed the older ones. The former medical schools have now been added. As expected, the list is now huge. Normally, I would have created a list like this as its own page; however, with the notes of mergers and former names of existing schools, I think it is beneficial to have all of this information in one place so the page can be searched easily so one can bounce back and forth to trace medical schools' histories. --Scott Alter (talk) 20:55, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for all your hard work. However, I do think that the former medical schools should have their own page. Without being able to provide any direct evidence, I personally suspect that most people who come to this site are more interested in seeing a list of schools where the MD is currently offered. The three lists together make a massive page, and I think at this point it is worth splitting. Does anyone second this opinion? Ehb (talk) 06:34, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Two lists

I'm not trying to split the page, but we need two lists (and no a one topic editor doesn't need to chime in) I spent the time cleaving the two lists apart because MD and DO are different degrees given out at different schools and have different uses. When 95% of people hear medical school they think MD. I am currently working on getting into a medical school, and I wanted to sort the lists but with out having to look at the osteopathy schools. Also "Allopathic medicine" means nothing, medical school will do. --216.67.20.169 (talk) 18:37, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

I think that this would be a set back considering all of the extensive discussion that is shown above on the talk page. The list exists in its current state after much debate and it seems to be a good compromise. Ehb (talk) 06:31, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

can we separate the table into osteopathic medical schools (D.O.) and allopathic medical schools (M.D.)? We can put both schools on this list but just separate them into two different tables. Again, this subject has been discussed extensively, and much work has been invested to achieve the current compromise. If you object to the reasons that the current list format has been adopted, feel free to explain why in the above thread. Split proposal

This list is really long, making it cumbersome to navigate. I think we should split it into two articles, one a list of current and pending US medical schools, and the other a list of defunct US medical schools. That would make it more user-friendly. College

When you pack for college you need to have everything so that you dont forget anything that is an essential....make sure to right a list of what you need and check something off every time you put it in your car. You may want to pack up your car a week or two before you are going to leave so that you can double and triple check your stuff. Adding a column to include the shortened name of schools

There should be a column on the table that includes the shortened name of the school. It will be helpful to a lot of people to recognize the school. Usually the names are Shorter than the whole school name so it will not take up a big column.Vishwajraval (talk) 18:17, 1 May 2014 (UTC) .

for-profit vs not-for-profit

Some of the schools listed in the table are *for-profit*. Given the large amount of criticism recently about *for-profit* colleges and universities, it may be useful to have a column indicating whether each school is *for-profit* or *not-for-profit*. "Allopathic"

The term "allopathic" is no longer considered a derogatory term for MD education. It has mainstream use as evidenced by its usage by the American Medical Association ([2], [3], [4], etc.), the many articles written by MD physicians that use the word "allopathic" in the title, and the fact that the Kiran C.
