Could we have updated figures please? Jojuj (talk) 11:30, 8 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

For the "average" does it take into account of the world population? ie China and India would have a greater impact on the average. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.236.143.170 (talk) 02:47, 19 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

What is the interval of time in which the average was taken? Obviously the average changes over time; Is this the average for the current year, current decade, since records were started?

i deleted average because it doesnt not take account into population as you have said. definition of avg = sum of samples / number of samples. in this case, sample refer to marriage age of couples, not couple-countries. thus it was wrong and deleted. Shaoquan (talk) 07:38, 3 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • Some of the data sources for this page (e.g. the U.S. Census Bureau) are in reference to the MEDIAN age at first marriage, not average. Perhaps not the most dramatic difference, but this is nonetheless a sloppy mistake.
Actually, in this case, median age is probably more representative of the typical age of marriage than the actual mean. This is because when you consider the range of ages (from about 18 to 60+), if you are to include those couple who first marry at age 40, 50, or 60, it would skew the average and make it appear that the "average age" is much higher than the "typical age"-which is represented by giving the median. --Kpstewart (talk) 21:27, 8 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Can we get a reference on the Argentina figures? Somehow each gender (M25.6/F29.9) is getting married older than the population's average (25). Does Argentina have an absolutely huge population of hermaphrodites? It's also unusual in that Argentina seems to be one of the only countries where women are older at first marriage than men; I'd like to see a reference. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.117.134.222 (talk) 19:00, 25 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Suggestions for improving the article

edit

A definition of age ratio would be useful. Jojuj (talk) 11:33, 8 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

To organize and add to the above remarks:

  • Explain in the article why median age is a better statistic to use for representing the "typical age" of marriage than the average. (I presented the reasoning above, but I feel I need some citations to back it up before placing it in the article). It would be nice to actually show both mean, median, and mode to give a better idea of the demographics -not for all countries as that may be overwhelming for many readers, but it might be nice to give a few examples.
  • Find other sources to show how the average age has increased in many countries over the past few decades/generations. I think it can be assumed that it has increased over the years, but it would also be nice to show how much and at what rate, and which countries are still increasing or have plateaued.
  • I don't know how to fix this, but some countries are sorted into the wrong continents (notably Georgia and Azerbaijan being in Europe - they're in Asia - there might be others as well).
  • Improved citations so that people can more easily find how the data was collected for each country.

Why are the figures for Canada so distorted? All of the usable cited articles list the Canadian data at about 6 years younger than claimed in this article. The most recent cited article is 2008; is there any evidence that more recent figures accurately reflect those given here? Ktin42213 (talk) 02:22, 26 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

"Russia: 39 for men, 18.5 for women, 28 Final Average" You are kidding, aren't you? Yet I think since it is a serious article, that joke needs to be fixed. "29 for men, 28.5 for women" sound more realistic to me. 155.105.7.43 (talk) 13:57, 15 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Several of these numbers seem very suspect and way too many have no sources whatsoever. Hope someone else is better than me and will do an overhaul. Example: China seems to be off, for both sexes, by almost 10 years, just looking at the UN chart. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.68.45.49 (talk) 14:26, 13 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Would it be possble if all the data could be arranged in a table. It could be a similar table. This would allow one to order the list accoring to country, age, sex and so forth. This would make it easier to sift through the data. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.207.5.245 (talk) 17:49, 26 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ref #3 is invalid

edit
  • Reference 3 doesn't really provide any data. It appears to be a conference organization website. The data may've been presented at this conference (?) but there's no data on the website that supports the Wiki article.... any help? Roadnottaken (talk) 19:28, 16 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Table

edit

This should be converted into a sortable table with three columns, the last being the difference between the ages. 153.19.193.168 (talk) 21:08, 8 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • I have tag the article for reorganisation in the hope that someone may complete the missing countries and use a table format in order to be consistent with other 'List of Countries' articles. YuMaNuMa (talk) 07:05, 18 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Done. I added an "average age" column, but maybe a difference in ages column could be include as well. I used Google Refine for this. It worked like a charm! We should also add some kind of graphic/plot to display all of the data in one image. We might also consider consolidating all of the tables (from each "continent" section) into one big table for easier sorting. --Thorwald (talk) 04:52, 15 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion for new article

edit

Hi! I find this article very interesting, but I think it should be good to create an article of Age at first child, now that article redirects to Advanced maternal age, which gives no list of the countries, anyone has the information to create that article? I think, it would be interesting to compare the age of the mother at first child with ageing of Europe. --Living001 (talk) 13:41, 16 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Citations needed

edit

There are a _lot_ of "Citation needed" for most of the countries. I would really like to fill these in with verifiable references, but I am not sure where these numbers came from? I should think the UN has most of this data, but as anyone who has ever used UN data before, they are terrible at presenting their information in a user-friendly way. Any thoughts? PS: A lot of these data are probably outdated by now. --Thorwald (talk) 04:29, 23 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Numbers for Africa?

edit

An obvious point, I know, but I did not see it discussed on the talk page. There are many countries represented in these statistics, across all continents except for Africa. Some of the sources cited for other countries do have related statistics - is it the problem that e.g. [2] and [7] cite "average" (one assumes mean average) instead of medians, as would be ideal? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.190.247.213 (talk) 14:56, 21 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Adding to the article

edit

This article is missing so many information. It lacks description and explanation. I would like to add the following: - Better introduction and explanation of why the topic is important and what is the purpose of these data. - Explaining the Low, Average and High numbers in the data table - Try to find out if the median has changes for some countries that the article did not have an updated data (2005 and lower) - Add description of each continent and where they stand with their average.

I found out a couple of reliable sources that could be helpful and relevant to this article:

Para removed from the lead

edit

Here, I've WP:BOLDly removed a para from the lead. Overall, the assertions in the para were unsupported. It does cite a source in support of the introductory clause of its first sentence, but the source cited is titled Australian Social Trends, 1997 and I'm guessing that it may not be representative of populations outside of Australia and outside of the year 1997. That source does cite another source which may be of wider applicability, but that is a study dated 1995 which may not be representative of the 24 year period between 1995 and 2019. Why is the list broken up into five different lists?

edit

I find this unhelpful. 70.27.65.249 (talk) 18:36, 29 July 2020 (UTC) AnonymousReply

I agree. It used to be easily navigable, but then more figures were added and It became less navigable. I suggest either a sortable list tab or a restructure of the article. BlacknoseDace (talk) 18:59, 29 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Map

edit

Specifically to BlacknoseDace, before you re-add the map (which I assume you would intend to do), please can you ensure any "white space" is cropped out and that the layout is consistent with previous variants (e.g. on the latest variant, why is a small part of Russia at the left end rather than this starting with Alaska, like previously?). The increased size I think was also disproportionate. Bungle (talkcontribs) 17:17, 23 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for letting me know. I'll edit the white space on the bottom out on the source image. I won't be able to make it exactly the same as the previous map because the new format removes some of the grey dots of dependent territories all around the globe that don't really need to be there. BlacknoseDace(say something. I'm lonely!)[I'm not a reference!] 19:04, 23 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Some of these statistics aren't referring to age at FIRST marriage

edit

For example based on the source given for Ireland it is just referring to the age of the people getting married regardless of whether or not it is their first marriage. 147.10.255.86 (talk) 21:55, 13 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
