Talk:Lee Selby

Welsh or British

edit

As with Joe Calzaghe, this has started to become somewhat of a tricky one due to a few recent back-and-forth edits. Do we list Selby supranationally as British (similar to American rather Texan, etc.) or subnationally as Welsh? Mac Dreamstate (talk) 12:03, 29 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Seems pretty clear. That Selby is Welsh is cited at the end of the opening sentence. Many reliable sources define Selby as Welsh, including the BBC, ITV, Boxing News & Views, the Grauniad, even the Daily Mail, the Daily Express and the Daily Telegraph call him a Welshman. But, most importantly, Lee Selby (seen here with fellow Welsh boxer Nathan Cleverly) self-identifies as Welsh. Daicaregos (talk) 15:44, 29 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Are you a boxing fan? Obviously not because in boxing, fighters from the UK box under the British flag for the British Boxing Board of Control. There is no English, Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish boxing association. This isn't football or rugby where you represent one of the 4. In boxing, you represent Britain. Also, why are you trying to convince everyone that he's Welsh? Everyone realises that, but if you're Welsh, you're automatically British. --85.210.137.62 (talk) 01:55, 30 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

It took some digging, but here is WP's guideline on the matter: WP:UKNATIONALS. Consensus is what we need, rather than edit-warring over this. This definitely needs other editors to join in, so until that happens, it's best we follow the example set in the Tyson Fury article by leaving the nationality field blank. The lead can stay as it is. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 02:24, 30 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

While we wait on the nationality field, how about for the lead we state "Lee Selby (birthdate) is a British professional boxer from Wales", as a way of encompassing both? I've seen non-boxing related articles do that for people from Scotland. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 12:13, 30 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Reliable sources refer to Selby as Welsh (some of those sources are noted above), which is what we go with. WP:UKNATIONALS emphasises the importance of self-identification. Selby self-identifies as Welsh. Who are we to say otherwise? He does not self-identify as, or represent, the UK. He flies the Welsh flag; in the ring, in his hotel, on his open-top bus. In the ring he is announced as being from Wales e.g. “The fighting pride of Barry, Wales; Lee Selby.” (54 mins) on his world title win. Numerous English boxers are noted as English (including Henry Cooper and Selby's potential opponent Josh Warrington). Lee Selby is Welsh. He should be described here, as he is elsewhere, as a Welsh boxer, and his nationality in the infobox noted as Welsh. Daicaregos (talk) 08:07, 1 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Three weeks since the last comment and no disagreement noted that Lee Selby is Welsh. As MOS:INFOBOX states "The purpose of an infobox: to summarize (and not supplant) key facts that appear in the article", I have reinstated his nationality in the infobox.
