What in the world?

What in the world is all the "(2.9.2)", "(2.9.1)", "(2.9.,1)", "(2.9.2)" garbage? Gene Nygaard 23:43, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

The "garbage" to which you referred are the UCI race categories. For example, "2.9.2" means a two day (that's the first 2) women's (that's the 9) category 2 (the final 2) race. In the last year or two, the UCI has changed their system of designating such things. Admittedly, the results list was rather long. That is going to be the case for very accomplished riders. I don't have any real problem with the focusing, as you call it. I think the photo gallery should be restored, though. Cheers! JFPerry 02:51, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

Editing the Palmares listings

When I post a rider's Palmares, I have opted to post a rather extensive listing. In the case of a very accomplished rider such as Judith Arndt, this can result in a lengthy list. It also includes information such as the race categories as assigned by UCI. These race categories can be helpful in determining which results should be retained when the list is "focused", to use one editor's term. Of course, you have to know what those numbers mean. If you don't know what they mean, are you really the right person to do the focusing? Why, for instance, is a 3rd place finish in the Grande Boucle to be included but not the 2nd place finish in the 2001 Women's Challenge? They were both category 1 stage race events.

In any case, I believe it is important to include the larger listing, at least initially. It is always possible and easy to drop events which one feels should not be included, but how do you add events and results if they aren't there in the first place?

Another point. Please do not edit these Palmares files (here or elsewhere) without first updating them for 2004 and 2005. The UCI now maintains a very useful and easy to use database of such results, so it shouldn't be that hard to add them before the final paring. Why is this important? Because if you pare the list first, then how is one to tell whether it has been updated for 2004 and 2005?

I will re-edit the Palmares files, first updating for 2004 and 2005, and then adding those dropped events which should have been left in. I will also add yearly team information (note that the team info as originally included was erroneous, not listing the Staurn cycling team).

Teams

According to the UCI final year-end points listings, Judith Arndt raced with Equipe Nurnberger for the years 2003 - 2005 and, before that, with Saturn in 2002. In an interview at the Sea Otter Classic in 2001 with German national women's team coach Jochen Dornbusch, the following exchange occurred:

Palmares: Do these young riders receive any kind of a stipend?

Jochen Dornbusch: No, but I do have some girls in the German military. . .

Palmares: Judith Arndt?

Jochen Dornbusch: She left the military. She is now looking for a team in the States or Europe maybe. In the military they sign up for 2 or 4 years where they can choose their military work, and they can go for training, and they can receive a little money. It is a very good idea for the German military to do something like that.

So, apparently, Arndt was in the military for 2000 and some years before. In a 2000 Olympic Games profile, her occupation was listed as "soldier". In 2001, she was racing with the German national women's team whose Directeur Sportif was Jochen Dornbusch.

The T-Mobile women's team is not new. They have sponsored a women's team since 2001. In that year, and for some years thereafter, Mari Holden and Amber Neben, both with Wikipedia entries, were among several strong U.S. riders on the team.

Palmarès

The Palmares listings for 2001 - 2005, after being updated for the last two years, have been added in a slightly scaled-down version. I realize it is a long listing. That is because this rider has a lot of very strong results. After all, she has finished in the top 5 in the UCI points list each of the past five years, a feat almost unprecedented in women's cycle racing history. When you do that, you are inevitably going to produce a long resume. That should not be a reason to arbitrarily shorten the listing, though!

The numbers (generously referred to as "garbage" above) have been kept, though in a modified form and with a lead-off explanation.

When you realize it results in a 'lengthy' list, why do you produce this list? Whom do you think you are doing a favour by that? Judith? She doesn't want her important results be covered by that garbage! Yourself? Obviously not! Me? Of course nooo! The public? ...

So why? I will answer this question for you: Because you are not able to distinguish between important and 'not so important' in terms of palmarès! Because you do not know the cycling sport enough. So why don't you let me do my work? Ok, I will vanish from this wiki - do what you want to do... Perhaps you'll find someone to translate this: 'Tu, was du nicht lassen kannst!' Photo rearrangement (August 2006)

The photo previously at the top of this page was moved to the gallery. That photo was not a picture of Judith Arndt but of a group of people, one of whom, and not the most prominent one at that, was Judith Arndt. Illustrative photos of biographical subjects should, if possible, be a picture of the subject, or at least the subject should be the most prominent person depicted. Just my opinion? Maybe. But I also believe this is Wikipedia policy (or guideline). JFPerry 14:13, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
