edit

i've rewritten my old rewrite of the Sobule stub to remove adjectives and limit the text to factual description in response to this info blurb about the article reading like an ad. If this meets your standards can we please remove this banner? I have no connection to the artist at all, and have written multiple entries on this site without ever receiving this kind of a dinging, and it kind of smarts. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.167.111.237 (talk) 10:25, August 24, 2007 (UTC)

Controversial edit

Just wondered about this; 'best known for the then-controversial song, "I Kissed a Girl"' Why was it controversial?Number36 22:32, 18 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think back when it came out it was uncommon for gay themed songs. Oreo 30 March 2007 Subscript text

I believe (as does Jill Sobule, whom I know personally) that IKAG was the first song with an overtly gay theme to enter the pop music mainstream (it was a regularly featured MTV "Buzz Bin" selection for a while). At the time of its release, there were some radio stations (notably in the "bible belt") that refused to play the song outright, and at least one Nashville radio station that played the song only after airing some sort of disclaimer regarding its subject matter. I think the song can be fairly called controversial based on these facts, though some independent verification of them would probably be in order. BostonTony 06:15, 25 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

This should mentioned in the article:

"This is the theme song from "Letting Go of God," the soon-to-be-released film version of the book.

Written by Jill Sobule and Julia Sweeney, and sung by the amazing Jill Sobule!"

Birth Year edit

The first sentence of the article says she was born in 1959, but the "background information" box says she was born in 1965. Does anyone know in which year she was actually born? 63.226.223.87 (talk) 17:54, 30 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

I think the 1965 date is correct. Looking back through the edit history, it looks like an IP user may have changed the lead date incorrectly, possibly nonconstructive editing. But since you have appropriately challenged it (and since neither date was actually cited anywhere it appears), we need to find a good reference that tells the correct date. Thank you. -- JoannaSerah (talk) 23:31, 30 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm... This biography from All Music Guide says that she was born in 1961. TV.com also says that she was born in 1961, though their bio is unattributed and may very well have been derived from the AMG's. I'm more inclined to trust AMG's date than either of the existing uncited dates, but I'm too new here to know if AMG is considered sufficiently authoritative to cite without a corroborating source. (I'd use them on-air, but that's clearly a different context.) Thanks! 63.226.223.87 (talk) 03:05, 1 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
I would say 1965 is not true. In an interview [1] she says that she returned from Spain 1982 where she stayed in her third year of college but failed to return in time. If 1965 would be true, she must have been 14 or younger when she started attending college which seems to be quite early. So it's 1961 or 1959. There are more sources for 1961 though.--Taliopo (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 15:08, 26 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
