I believe he also played for Middle Tennessee State Normal School before he got to Vanderbilt Cake (talk) 00:00, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. Here's what his obituary in the New York Times said: "His long association with college football began after he served in World War I. He enrolled at Middle Tennessee Normal and starred in that school's 1920 opening game against Vanderbilt. A Vanderbilt fan convinced him to transfer, which he did the following Tuesday, and on the next Saturday he was playing for Vanderbilt against Tennessee." Quite interesting. You know there are sites referencing a Middle Tennessee game in 1920 in which Vanderbilt won 34 to 0. You'll notice 1920 Vanderbilt Commodores football team doesn't have it. Any newspaper account of it, so much as a score, to say when it took place, was not something I could find (though, that's with a paucity of Tennessee newspapers online aside from at genealogybank). Jess did quite well in the Tennessee game. It must have been before then, and some other sources allude to it being early too, but then there's stuff like this everywhere one looks: 1920 Vanderbilt vs Middle Tennessee State. I am quite perplexed by when this happened or if it happened. The place to stick it is either before Birmingham-Southern or between Virginia and Sewanee, which both seem plausible on its face.Cake (talk) 14:44, 29 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
