Copyright Violation edit

I'm going to put a "copyvio" tag on this article. I've compared it to the Mactutor biography with these results.

Wiki: Kashi produced his treatise Risala al-Muhitiya (Treatise on the Circumference) in July 1424, a work in which he calculated 2π to nine sexagesimal (base 60) places and translated this into sixteen decimal (base 10) places. This was an achievement far beyond anything which had been obtained before by the Greeks, Chinese or Indians. It would be almost 200 years before van Ceulen would surpass Kashi's accuracy with 20 decimal places.

Mactutor:

... He produced his Treatise on the Circumference in July 1424, a work in which he calculated 2π to nine sexagesimal places and translated this into sixteen decimal places. This was an achievement far beyond anything which had been obtained before, either by the ancient Greeks or by the Chinese (who achieved 6 decimal places in the 5th century). It would be almost 200 years before van Ceulen surpassed Al-Kashi's accuracy with 20 decimal places.

Wiki: While Tamerlane was undertaking his military campaigns, conditions were very difficult with widespread poverty where Kashi grew up. And Kashi lived in poverty, like so many others, and devoted himself to science while moving from town to town. But conditions improved when Shahrokh took over after his father's death. He brought economic prosperity to the region, and strongly supported artistic and intellectual activity. With the changing atmosphere, Kashi's life also improved markedly.

Mactutor:

While Timur was undertaking his military campaigns, conditions were very difficult with widespread poverty. al-Kashi lived in poverty, like so many others at this time, and devoted himself to astronomy and mathematics while moving from town to town. Conditions improved markedly when Shah Rokh took over after his father's death. He brought economic prosperity to the region and strongly supported artistic and intellectual life. With the changing atmosphere, al-Kashi's life also improved markedly.

I don't think the whole article is a copyright violation, but these two paragraphs certainly are. I've checked the page history, and the problem is in the original version dated 11 Feb, 2005. Mactutor's copyright is from 1999. DavidCBryant 11:20, 9 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Lousy transcription edit

The transcription of the name of al-Kashi in Farsi reads: al-Dīn Ghiyāth Jamshīd Kāshānī. I think the transcription should be faithful, instead of giving two variants: Ghiyāth al-Dīn Jamshīd ibn Masʾūd al-Kāshī and Jamshīd Kāshānī. I'm not sure though how to modify the article. 213.98.121.240 (talk) 22:59, 13 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm pretty sure the name in Farsi reads 'Ghiyāth al-Dīn Jamshīd Kāshānī', which is also his name as given in the infobox. I've changed the first sentence of the article to give that as the transliteration of the Farsi. Please someone correct my attempt if appropriate.
