Hidalgo (Mexico) → Hidalgo (state) — If the state isn't to get primary usage (see comments on Talk:Chihuahua (Mexico)), Hidalgo (Mexico) is potentially ambiguous with the various cities in Mexico called Hidalgo (in Coahuila, NL, Tamps...). Hidalgo (state) is clearer and more useful, and, I believe, in line with naming conventions. — Aille (talk) 14:00, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Georgia's a special case... U.S. state vs. Confederate state vs. independent state. A better, and more numerously populated, convention is given by Acre (state) and Salzburg (state), with Amazonas (Brazilian state) & Amazonas (Venezuelan state) when dabbing is needed.

The proposed disambiguator "(Mexico state)" also re-opens the quasi-eternal Mexico state, State of Mexico, Mexico State, etc. can of worms: is this Hidalgo (Mexico state) a town in the Estado de México? The more grammatically accurate Hidalgo (Mexican state) would be the way to go, were it necessary; fortunately, no other country has a state called Hidalgo, so it isn't. OK, there are some variations of state disambiguation. Better to use one that works in all cases. I would not oppose Hidalgo (Mexican state) if that is where consensus winds up. Also note the Victoria (Australia) was a recent rename effort for a state in a country. That is yet a third variation. Vegaswikian (talk) 02:38, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Fortunately, that was just a hypothetical: I don't think the EdoMex has a(n) Hidalgo -- they're probably sore at him for taking away such a large chunk of its territory to create his state. FWIW, convention seems to have settled on "Name, Mexico State" for towns and cities there, so should we find it does have a town called Hidalgo, the visually confusing but rhythmically pleasing Hidalgo, Mexico, Mexico, probably won't be necessary. • Support per arguments above and at Talk:Chihuahua (Mexico). We have Tyrol (state), Bremen (state), Paraná (state) etc., and only take in the country when it's needed for disambiguation or at least to prevent confusion (Amazonas (Brazilian state) because there's Amazonas (Venezuelan state); Georgia (U.S. state) because there's Georgia (country), which is also a state; Punjab (India) because there's Punjab (Pakistan), which is not a state but could be mistaken for one).   • I have no problem with someone closing this to '(state)'. However this comment raises an interesting question. And that is why is Georgia (U.S. state) not at Georgia (state)? That would better seem to match the apparent consensus that you have pointed out and would dab in the same manner as Georgia (country). Vegaswikian (talk) 06:53, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

• No incoming links at the moment, but other similar pages (Chihuahua, Mexico; Veracruz, Mexico; etc.) do get linked to. Redirecting Hidalgo, Mexico, to Hidalgo would take care of any potential redlinks and get incoming traffic within striking distance of where it wants to be.
