Untitled edit

It would be interesting to learn the truth of the story about the brigade running out of water in the Sinai from a more objective source. The British had been present and fighting in Egypt for over thirty years by then, and staff officers would have perfectly well aware of how much water men and animals needed. Even in temperate climates (eg. Britain) men will be dying after about 2 or 3 days without water, and in the Sinai Desert it must be far less than that, so they can't actually have been completely without water for very long. Even reading between the lines of the story the water was on its way, albeit half a day later than planned, and you'd have to have watched the movie "Gallipoli" a few times too many to think a British general would actually have preferred to see a few thousand of his own men die of thirst than have his beauty sleep disturbed. Maybe they had been issued with plenty but Australian discipline was poor (poor distribution, missing another arranged supply opportunity, or officers & NCOs were not drilled on the importance of making sure men obeyed instructions) so his men ran out quicker than they should have done, and Pompey threw a tantrum and allowed such a legend to grow up to cover his own or some other Australian's embarrassing cock-up. PTSD and suicide in lead edit

G'day, given the prominence of Pompey as an example of a WWI soldier with PTSD who took his own life, I would expect to see it mentioned in the lead. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 04:22, 10 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

This article is in good shape. A few comments:
Lead

  • link subaltern, second lieutenant and major general
Y Done, except that major general is already linked in the first sentence. Hawkeye7 (talk) 11:52, 10 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • First Australian Imperial Force should probably just be Australian Imperial Force, that was what it was called and he didn't live to see the 2nd
Y True, but oddly enough the term "First AIF" was indeed used in 1914. Hawkeye7 (talk) 11:52, 10 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • "as a candidate as a..." should probably be "as a candidate for the... in the Senate"
     Y Done. Hawkeye7 (talk) 11:52, 10 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Victorian Police strike should either be Victoria Police strike or Victorian police strike. Victoria Police has always been the proper name. I know, the article is incorrectly titled.
     Y Very well. Hawkeye7 (talk) 11:52, 10 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Special Constables should be in initial lower case, also link
     Y Done. Didn't know there was an article. Hawkeye7 (talk) 11:52, 10 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • should probably mention he suffered from mental illness and took his own life

Early life

  • Harold Edward "Pompey" Elliott is a bit incongruous, as he wasn't called that until later. I'd introduce the nickname at the appropriate chronological point.
     Y Done. Hawkeye7 (talk) 03:57, 11 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • "the farms acquired outright" there is only mention of the family farm, were there others?
     Y Yes, there were multiple properties. Hawkeye7 (talk) 03:57, 11 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • suggest putting Elsinore in quotes instead of in italics, then be consistent with the later named residences

  • in the caption of the desert training pic, McNicol needs another L

Should this article be moved? edit

Is Harold Edward Elliott really his most commonly used name? Should this be moved over the redirect at Pompey Elliott? Or Harold Elliott (general) or similar? The-Pope (talk) 02:39, 15 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
