Talk:HMS Somerset (1748)

Addition of naval documentation reference edit

George 1861, I tentatively reverted your addition to the section on the American Revolutionary War, despite it likely being a good reference, because it introduced a sentence fragment that was not incorporated into the existing text. It would be helpful if you could take the time to re-add it in a way that flows with the existing text. It would also help to indicate the page number in your source reference. Plus, edit summaries are always a help to your colleagues here. Thank you. Eric talk 13:52, 27 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

(Eric moving George 1861's reply from my talkpage to here to keep discussion on one page):
HMS Somerset Added in a known Captain at a known time. Would seem to be usefull info on a ship's history. Some cases HMS X left Liverpool under command of Capt. Bly, other cases it just from status reports. If from status reports what would be a good way of listing? GeorgeGeorge 1861 (talk) 18:24, 27 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
I don't disagree regarding the utility of the info. As I wrote above, I think you could work on the presentation a bit to make it fit better in the article text. Eric talk 19:36, 27 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Would like to all flow but sometimes would be difficult with info available. Currently at a list of Ships & their Captains in V. Adm Graves' Squadron on 1 January, 1775. Usefull info but no additional context to add "Flow". "Just the facts ma'am" as they used to say on dragnet. How do you add page number? I know on some things the link changes as you go down, but some don't. George 1861 (talk)
Here's the guidance on citing sources: Wikipedia:Citing sources. There's a big section with subsections for different citation template options, and links to those templates. They list the parameters available, such as page number. The template documentation can be a chore to wade through. Eric talk 14:14, 5 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
George, I'm sorry to say that I reverted your last edit here. As this is an encyclopedia, as opposed to a dictionary, we write the articles in complete sentences. While I can't point to any guideline that specifically states that, I'm sure it is the accepted style. Eric talk 04:02, 10 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
