Expansion

How about expanding this article? For example, what countries do not outlaw forced marriage? What is the UN's take? What groups exist to provide help? Stargoat (talk) 16:24, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

I don't know how to fix this because there isn't a source and I don't know the story to which this sentence refers, but there is something wrong with this sentence: "For example, a mother promised her sister that she would marry her daughter to his son before the daughter was even born." Maybe "his" should be "her sister's"? I don't know how to tag it properly either. Christopherjfoster (talk) 15:51, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Shotgun Weddings

I don't have a reference either, but I thought that the term "Shotgun Wedding" was not referring to the coercive threat of violence, but of the typical shotgun having two barrels or other ability for a quick "follow up" shot. Male vs. Female

"In most but not all forced marriages, it is the female (rather than the male) who is the involuntary spouse"

This is the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard. Somebody is imagining that most if not all the girls involved are "prizes", which many certainly are not [citation: personal experience]. This article has left something out

Forced marriages are legal in Saudi Arabia, for example. They should be illegal anywhere in the world, but actually they are not. (Metron (talk) 01:21, 5 January 2013 (UTC))

Deleting the subsection about shotgun weddings in East Asia

I deleted the subsection about shotgun weddings in East Asia, because it is almost the same as the section 'In East Asia' in Shotgun wedding. Furthermore, strictly speaking, this subsection does not deal with forced marriage. The link to the article 'Shotgun Wedding' is enough. Moreover, I made the new section 'Forced Marriage during the Khmer Rouge period in Cambodia'. Suggest merging https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Servile_marriage . that page is very brief, overlapping in meaning and even citing the same 1956 UN reference as basis for a definition. --BackwardsBoy (talk)
