At one point a "dictionary of outlandish words" is placed on the hobgoblins hat, the words come alive and start crawling around like insects. This seems to me to be a case of etymology becoming entomology, but was this pun intentional? Does this even work as a pun in Finnish?Pignut 08:22, 23 July 2007 (UTC)pignut

Note that Tove Jansson wrote in Swedish, not Finnish. Anyway, it could work in both languages: Swedish: etymologi & entomologi (or insektologi); Finnish: etymologia & entomologia. --Jonik (talk) 20:22, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

"Finn Family Moomintroll" was also published in the US in 1952 by Bobbs-Merrill Company as "The Happy Moomins." It was translated by Elizabeth Portch. Elsewhere in this Moomin section it is said that "Comet in Moominland" was published as "The Happy Moomins." As I own the 1952 volume, I can attest that it is essentially identical to "Finn Family Moomintroll. Peterxh (talk) 15:01, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

It seems to me very likely that the syntax of the English translation of the title is a reference to The Swiss Family Robinson. Can anybody confirm this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.88.178.37 (talk) 18:56, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

I've always assumed the translators must have been influenced by that title, though I can't think why – the intertextuality it creates isn't remotely relevant. I doubt there's any definite evidence of their motives. David Arthur (talk) 20:38, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Translated in 1950

The curent version of this article says that this book was published in english i 1961. That must be wrong, for several reasons. First because it was to first moomin book to be translated into english. Second because it caused British Associated Newspapers to contact Jansson in 1952 to make an agreement about the Moomin comic strips. And finally because Boel Westin's authoritative biography Tove Jansson, ord, bild, liv (2007) says that Trollkarlens hatt was published in UK as Finn Family Moomintroll in 1950, and in US as The happy Moomins in 1951. The Tove Jansson wiki page shows the cover of the Puffin paperback edition of Finn Family Moomintroll (in English), dated 1948. But this date might be wrong. Valetude (talk) 18:34, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

Illustrations
