I HAVE A FEELING edit

that this "encyclopedia article" is included because someone has discovered the existence of ethelreda malte in her family tree and wishes to give her more gravitas than she deserves.65.93.35.157 (talk) 23:02, 18 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

I assure you, as the creator of this article and thousands of others on Tudor people, that I have not traced my family tree back to the 16th century. There are 3 very reliable references here, and Ethelreda has her own section in at least two books on Henry VIII's mistresses, including 'The Mistresses of Henry VIII' by Kelly Hart. Suggesting that a volunteer prolific editor (i.e. me!) created this disingenuously isn't really very nice. Neither is criticising someone else's work - again given voluntarily - as 'badly written and completely without merit.' If you believe it is badly written, either improve it or tag it for improvement, with a tag such as {notability}, {cleanup} etc. Don't criticise someone else for trying. All articles get improved over time. Boleyn (talk) 08:12, 19 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Actually, this is complete and utter rubbish. Sounds like it's a personal article that perhaps should have stayed that way as this woman was not an illegitimate daughter of Henry VIII. "The Tudor Place" tries to attribute their article to the History of Parliament -- however -- the actual article for her husband, John Harington states:
In September 1547 Harington bought two manors in Gloucestershire in part exchange for the surrender of his annuity. It is possible that this purchase was influenced by his marriage or betrothal to the illegitimate daughter of Henry VIII’s tailor John Malte. In the previous year Malte had purchased the manor of Kelston in Somerset on behalf of himself and Audrey Malte alias Digneley, ‘bastard daughter of the said John Digneley alias Dobson’, and on to Sept. 1546 he made Audrey, ‘my bastard daughter begotten upon the body of Joan Digneley’, his chief legatee and recipient of all his property in Berkshire, Hertfordshire and Somerset. At the time that Malte made his will Audrey was not yet 15 and engaged to an illegitimate son of (Sir) Richard Southwell, perhaps Richard Southwell alias Darcy. Harington’s marriage to Audrey Malte gave him wealth and position in the west country, as well as in the home counties: she was still alive in early 1556. The first reference to her as Henry VIII’s illegitimate daughter comes in the not altogether reliable Nugae Antiquae compiled largely by her stepson but as evidently neither John Malte nor Harington was aware of her august paternity it is doubtless a myth. Harington’s second marriage took place in 1559 or 1560 when Sir John Markham provided for his unmarried daughter Isabella. (CPR, 1547-8, pp. 62-63; 1555-7, p. 93; LP Hen. VIII, xxi; PCC 39 Alen, 50 Chaynay; VCH Berks. iv. 536-7); History of Parliament: John Harington. It says flat out that it is a myth. -- Lady Meg (talk) 04:48, 7 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

I don't know if you're saying that my comment was complete rubbish, or the article I created. Either comment is rude. As I stated above, this was originally created after reading Hart's book, and she doesn't argue that Malte was Henry VIII's illegitimate daughter, just that it was reputed at the time. If you feel the article would give the reader the impression the rumours were definitely true, then please edit and change - however, that doesn't make a sourced article complete and utter rubbish. You've clearly found some good sources and looked into it - information like this will benefit the article. The alleged paternity of Ethelreda is discussed in numerous reliable sources - however, I don't know of one that concludes that there is strong evidence that she was Henry VIII's child. There's a reason I don't like creating articles anymore - attacking comments, such as the two above, are the main reason, as it seems OK to be rude on here.
