The borough was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the county borough of South Shields along with the municipal borough of Jarrow and the urban districts of Boldon and Hebburn from County Durham.

Seton and Theosophy

Regarding the claim that

According to [Anya Seton's] introduction to the novel Green Darkness, both of her parents were practicing Theosophists.

the introduction in question states:

The theme of this book is reincarnation....

I happened to be raised to this doctrine in which both my parents believed. Mother was a Theosophist long before I was born; indeed she had my horoscope cast when I was a month old. (It did not turn out to be a very accurate forecast!)

It would seem that "this doctrine" refers to reincarnation, and that from this text we can only imply that her mother was a Theosophist, not necessarily both parents. I have edited accordingly.

(I would greatly like to see any evidence that Seton was a Theosophist himself, as it would tie in with research I'm doing - please e-mail if you know of such! TomSwiss (talk) 03:25, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Controversy Section

There are several mentions of Ernest Thompson Seton's appropriation of American Indian culture. While this may very well be true, these statements uncited and carry implicit bias. It would be interesting to add a "Controversy" section and expand on these appropriation allegations, rather than having statements scattered throughout the article. It feels like an elephant in the room.

1) "He is responsible for the appropriation and incorporation of what he believed to be American Indian elements into the traditions of the BSA."

2) "He formed the Woodcraft Indians in 1902 and invited the local youth to join. Despite the name, the group was made up of non-native boys and girls."

3) "Seton was Chief Scout of the BSA from 1910–1915 and his work is in large part responsible for the appropriation and incorporation of what he believed to be American Indian elements into the traditions of the BSA. However, he had significant personality and philosophical clashes with Beard and James E. West."

Agreed, the language isn't encyclopedic and without a source only reveals the author(s)' feelings, not any verifiable facts. As such, and given this has been this way for 4 years, I've changed it until it can be improved. If there is appropriate controversy, there should be verifiable sources discussing it as a controversy, in which case a devoted section may be appropriate. However, at the moment, it doesn't seem there are any so it's impossible to say. 24.251.107.39 (talk) 20:06, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

dept and bill story

This one sounds to be not real. The source is very limited, the claim can be out of context. I found no other factual source other than the google books link which gives only one sentence following by an "Originally" followup sentence start which could be the origin of the made up story. Whoever does have the book could check it.

For me this story sound like the movie plot I was searching for and found this Wiki page. All the references [6][7][8] are younger than the movie I am looking for (~ early 90s). 89.134.28.185 (talk) 21:16, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
