Name

The explanation of Don Ho's name including his full name with Cantonese pronunciation, the Chinese characters and the pronunciation in Mandarin Chinese should be left as it reads today. The overwhelming majority of Chinese people today speak and understand Mandarin Chinese and know Cantonese music stars by their Mandarin names rather than by their Cantonese names. If one is going to talk about Don Ho with a Chinese individual it would be almost useless to refer to his Cantonese name. Chinese who know of Don Ho would almost universally recognize the Mandarin pronunciation of his name.

If Don Ho did not speak Mandarin, it is useless to include Mandarin in this article. If anything, for his whole life he knew himself as "Don Ho", not "Don He" or "He Da-lai". Perhaps he even knew himself as "Don Ho Tai-loy" or some other combination of his English and Cantonese first name. It is the same reason we do not include Mandarin romanisation in articles with Korean or Japanese names (which, despite using Chinese characters, are never read in Mandarin).

Also, it reeks of racism and disrespect to say that someone's birth name is "useless" because of his partial Chinese ethnicity and the assumption that ALL Chinese now speak Mandarin, which is not only untrue in China (especially in rural areas), but is hardly true in Hong Kong, where singers are in fact only referred to in Cantonese. 137.189.254.148 (talk) 14:04, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

He was mixed Hawaiian, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and German .. which would make it hard for him to decide which church to go

Had he gone to any, he would probably be excommunicated from any due to his polygamous-like , and "open" relationships. Hoku statement

In September 2006, Ho married Haumea Hebenstreit, who produced his show at the Waikiki Beachcomber. Ho's daughter, Hoku, performed with her father in his Waikīkī show and later went on to become a nationally known recording artist in her own right.

Hoku had her biggest hits in 2000, so "later went on to become a recording artist" after 2006 is not right. Guroadrunner 14:09, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

何大來

The English spelling of Don Ho's Chinese name Ho Tai Loy was derived from the Cantonese Romanization of 何大來 which is pronounced He Da Lai in Mandarin Chinese. As a side note, use of the Cantonese Romanization for the spelling of Don Ho's Chinese name does not in any way prove Don Ho was Cantonese. All it shows is that when Don Ho was born his parents chose to adopt the Cantonese Romanization for his Chinese name. The entry had "何泰學" in 2004 (User:Chan Han Xiang, inactive), which was changed to "何大來" in 2005 (User:Mr Tan). Neither name has a source, but the wording of the 2005 edit summary is unnerving, as if the edit was made solely on the basis of the romanization "Tai Loy". Children

The Los Angeles Times obit says he has six children with Melva May, three with Patricia, and one more, unnamed. Does anyone know the name of this child and who its mother is? Corvus cornix 21:16, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

the LA Times obit said it got its information from Ho's daughter Dayna, but though she told them 10 children, they didn't know any further info as to who the tenth was. Corvus cornix 20:37, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Article image

Per WP:FUC we can not use a copyrighted image of an album cover to illustrate the artist. We could use it to illustrate a section or article specifically about the album per fair use terms. Any effert to find an image we can use to illustrate this article without violating copyrights would be greatly appreciated. Rklawton 18:34, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

That would run against our goal of creating a "free" encyclopedia. Besides, there must be hundreds of thousands of snapshots of him out there. A free replacement is available if only someone would donate one. Rklawton 15:06, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Dayna Ho-Henry

Dayna died after Don Ho in 2007. She isn't mentioned in his article. She doesn't have an article of her own. Since her death didn't affect Don Ho's life, and since this article is about Don Ho's life (as opposed to his family tree), reporting her death here isn't helpful. Rklawton 15:06, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Since she doesnt have an article of her own, and his family will not, this article may as well contain SOME information about his family tree. For example, someone may refrain from posting negative aspects of his life due to concern about Dayna. Move from Don Ho

This page has been moved from Don Ho and replaced with an article about a lesser-known Vietnamese singer. I propose moving this back to Don Ho and moving that to Don Ho (Vietnamese American singer). Jokestress 16:54, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

The arrangement as at present looks very sensible to me, with Don Ho the well known Hawaiian musician, and Don Ho (Vietnamese American singer) for the relatively minor singer. In my opinion it should be kept this way .. dave souza, talk 18:57, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

I think the current arrangment sucks. You are putting a dirty slutty crazy dead american who faded out long ago, above a respectable and "current" figure. Vietnam has 70 million people, and Ho was only popular in Hawaii. It says "he was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base and went to the local town of Concord , CA , to buy a portable keyboard." Keesler Air Force Base is in Biloxi Mississippi.

Ukulele
