Most Vauable Player edit

"The following year he was the leading scorer and voted Most Valuable Player"

I very much doubt it was called Most Valuable Player, that is an American term. Since there's no source for that line anyway, I can't find out what it was actually called.

It was for the 'Nike Cup' which i believe is hosted in america. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.150.92.37 (talk) 03:08, 7 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Transfer fee edit

Is that actually the training compensation? Chelsea offer him first professional contract and have to pay Manchester City training compensation. It is not abut his age. Matthew_hk tc 15:02, 6 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

He was already a professional at Manchester City - it is not classed as "training compensation". For a Bosman transfer between two English clubs a fee determined by tribunal applies if the player is under 24, see for example [1]. Oldelpaso (talk) 19:46, 6 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Number at Chelsea edit

The article currently states he will wear the number 23 for Chelsea, however there is a photo on the Chelsea website showing him in training with the number 18 on the training kit. Should we change the article to reflect this? http://www.chelseafc.com/page/NewSignings/0,,10268~1712990,00.html mpbx (talk) 03:10, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Until Chelsea confirm their 2009-10 squad numbers, he hasn't got a number at all. What they wear in pre-season isn't necessarily the same as their eventual squad number, for instance, Franco di Santo wore #36 on last pre-season tour but #9 in 2008-09. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 07:16, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Error? edit

"Sturridge has represented England at youth level from under-16 upwards.[9] Most notably he scored at the European Under-17 Championship in the final against Italy, twice against Holland for the Under 18 side, and again at the recent Under-19 European Championships against Holland."

Page says this, with only a reference for representing england at youth level in general, it mentions he scored a goal in the final of the european U 17 championship, but when visiting the link it shows a list of finals with the only final england have taken a part of, losing 1-0 to spain, thus not scoring vs italy..

  • Thank you for pointing this out. You are correct, so I removed the reference to Sturridge scoring against Italy as it simply couldn't have happened, given England didn't play Italy in an under-17 final. Thank you, PamukSoundystem (talk) 19:01, 6 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sturridge did not participate in the 2009 Community Shield. His medal is from 2010. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.212.251.3 (talk) 13:52, 15 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Height edit

The premier league website has listed him as 6 foot 2 which is the source for his height on wikipedia. However he is definitely not that tall. 5 foot 11 would be a more appropriate answer for his height. When he signed for Chelsea he was only marginally taller than Carlo Ancelotti who was around 5 foot 11 in his prime. If you look at pictures of him with Owen Coyle who is 5 foot 11 Sturridge looks the same height if not shorter. When you see him next to other England under 21 players who are listed at a similar height to him on wikipedia eg Chris Smalling and Jack Rodwell he is a good few inches shorter than them. When playing for Bolton you could clearly see that he was not the same height as Gary Cahill. He is certainly not short but he isn't 6 foot 2.

Find a citation for his height then and put it in. Until then, his official height should remain that which is given by the Premier League. Quentin X (talk) 15:24, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Granted that is the only citation but I'm sure you would admit the height given by the premier league is wrong, even though they clearly should be a reliable source and we shouldn't use that source because it is wrong. Obviously just using my opinion over theres is silly but when I know it's wrong then it's annoying. I look forward to seeing his height changed to 5 foot 11 in the future when there is a proper citation.

According to Football Manager 2012 he is 181 centimetres tall, which is 5 foot 11 and likely his correct height. Anyone able to provide a link courtesy of Football Manager 2012? Thanks

I guess this wouldn't be a strong enough source? Ignore what stats FM have given him. He's much better than that. Height is right though

He is listed as 1.83 m (6') on the Sky Sports website. At least we have the evidence to bring his height down a little. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.214.131.210 (talk) 01:02, 5 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

He is in fact without a doubt NOT 6'2". That would make him as tall as Thierry Henry, Didier Drogba and taller than Steven Gerrard. A simple Google search of him with the latter two players would reveal that he is in no way possible the same height as they are. For whatever reason (premierleague.com) there seems to be misinformation regarding his height floating around the web on what should be creditable sources. While most of these sources didn't seem to bother fact checking their information, it appears the one with the most to lose, did: [1] ESPN has him listed at what has to be the most accurate height one may find on the web (5'10"/1.79m) and just happens to be as creditable as it gets. It would appear the guys over at ESPN at least value even the tiniest details, and are beyond simply cutting and pasting whatever they find online. Sol10Dios (talk) 06:09, 16 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

In the Liverpool section it says that he has signed a 5-year contract. None of the sources backs-up this claim. Both speak of a long-term contract. Some sources mention a 3.5 year contract, which wouldn't be that long-term. I'd suggest "5-year" to be substitued by "long-term", as obviously there is no information available about the length of his contract.

Goal scoring record edit

"Youth level

Sturridge has represented England at U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 and U21 levels.[12] He scored twice against the Netherlands for the Under 18 side in 2007, netting again in the Under-19 European Championships against the Netherlands. He scored the only goal for England U21 in a 1–1 draw against Greece U-21 in Greece and scored his second U-21 goal in the 1–0 win over Portugal. He was named in the England U21 squad for the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship."

Sturridge has scored an international match goal across all youth age groups

The FA confirm that he is believed to be the only player to do so, from U15 through to full international level.

Daniel's sublime chip for his goal against West Brom on 26th October was his 8th Premier League goal this season and his 21st goal so far in 2013, he has 21 goals in the 27 games since he transferred to Liverpool in January 2013. 199.4.27.122 (talk) 14:32, 31 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

That's nice, striker scores goal. Is this notable in some way? Britmax (talk) 14:47, 31 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

I've recently removed prose about this goal. We don't need prose on every goal; the page would just be full of a line or two on each goal, a reference, and that's it. There was nothing particularly notable about the goal; 8th of the season, 21 in 27, 21 this year, nothing there. GedUK  12:29, 1 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

I would agree, the problem is that we have a, in my opinion, out-of-date guideline on things like this, which basically says you should have one, the official website, and that we shouldn't be a link farm. WP:EL is the guidline. GedUK  13:12, 30 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

I'm not convinced Facebook, Twitter and Instagram really need Wikipedia's SEO benefit to be successful so I agree, the guidelines could probably do with a re-think to include verified accounts on the major social media channels. It would certainly help the profiles of professional athletes. Forgive my newness to Wikipedia - were I to make the edits I've suggested, above, are you saying they'd be deleted due to the aforementioned outdated guidelines?

Subclassic (talk) 09:03, 31 January 2014 (UTC) subclassicReply

Please could someone advise/help with this? In the interests of completion and thoroughness, all official online channels should be included in the Wikipedia entry.

Subclassic (talk) 19:22, 1 February 2014 (UTC)SubclassicReply

The relevant section of the guideline listed above is here. As a general rule, only one official link is included. To quote from the guideline " Wikipedia does not attempt to document or provide links to every part of the subject's web presence or provide readers with a handy list of all social networking sites"... ..."More than one official link should be provided only when the additional links provide the reader with significant unique content and are not prominently linked from other official websites. For example, if the main page of the official website for an author contains a link to the author's blog and Twitter feed, then it is not appropriate to provide links to all three. Instead, provide only the main page of the official website in this situation." Oldelpaso (talk) 21:43, 1 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I know what it says, but I'm still of the view it's out of date. GedUK  13:08, 3 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
That's something to take up at Wikipedia talk:External links. Oldelpaso (talk) 17:27, 3 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned references in Daniel Sturridge edit

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Daniel Sturridge's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

On the 12th May 2014 after a prolific season for Liverpool, Daniel was named in Roy Hodgson's 23 man squad to go to the World Cup in Brazil.

Not done for now: Three small problems: the date is the date of the article and not necessarily the date he was named, the "prolific season" stuff sounds a bit like WP:PEACOCK wording and we use the last name when referring to the subject of the article. The remainder seems a bit short for a new section. Would you like to add it to some current section or add more content? Thanks, Older and ... well older (talk) 15:49, 3 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Sturridge's height edit

Liverpool FC, Goal.com, UEFA, Soccerway, the Premier League & Whoscored state that Sturridge's height is 1.88 m. Transfermarkt and Sky Sports states that his height is 1.83 m. ESPN FC, Washington Post & FIFA states that his height is 1.79 m. Personally, I am inclined to list his height as 1.88 m, but first, I would like to hear some community consensus. Thoughts?--Alza08 (talk) 03:14, 14 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Transfermarkt is not a reliable source and should never be used on wikipedia. Regarding the other sources Premier League us often used for Premier League players and since both PL and Liverpool themselves has 1.88m that seems like the correct height. QED237 (talk) 12:44, 14 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

I think common sense and photographic evidence should prevail. Seeing him next to others listed at 6 ft 2 clearly proves he is a good few inches shorter than his listed height. Surely having seen him alongside his 5 ft 11 strike partner Luis Suarez everyone can see that there is nothing between them (although Sturridge perhaps slightly shorter). If he's to be listed at 6 ft 2 then I think it should be acknowledged that this is his 'official height' and not actually his correct height. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.134.161.160 (talk) 11:37, 26 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Some notable information to go under '2017–18 season' section, where Sturridge came off the bench for LFC to score against Arsenal. Reference: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40990427

On Sunday the 27th of August 2017, in a Premier League home fixture against Arsenal, Sturridge made a 74th minute substitute appearance replacing Sadio Mané. After being on the pitch for as little as three minutes, Sturridge connected with Mohamed Salah's cross, heading in at the far post past Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech; consequently scoring Liverpool's fourth, and final goal of the day.
