Re Expansion

edit

What this article really needs is some context. Where are the bracelets from? Who made them? Why are they important? Right now the article assumes the reader knows the back story. FlyingToaster 17:48, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

These sections are mostly about one type of gold bracelet. I could add more descriptions to this and to the other various jewelries that are exposed on the gallery. I suggest move it to draft and work on restructuring this article. Boldwin (talk) 23:09, 2 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

GOCE copyedit August 2011

edit

Hi

During the copyedit a few things came to light that may need attention:

Various bracelets
  • "bands of right or oblique lines." - right lines? Horizontal?
    • The French text ="... bandes de lignes droite ou obliques, serie d’XX. Les objets..." However, I concur with your suggestion bands of horizontal or oblique lines. It makes senseBoldwin (talk) 00:44, 10 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • "They all have a green patina ranging from dark green to dull green, bluish green, bluish gloss." - Does this mean they all have a patina ranging form dark green to dull green and they are bluish green and bluish gloss. Does it mean they are all in a range "from dark green to dull green, or dark green to bluish green, or dark green to a bluish gloss" - Needs clarifying
Maybe it was better to use varying than ranging. They all have a green patina varying from dark green to dull green and bluish green and bluish gloss. I hope it helps. Thank you so much for your patience.Boldwin (talk) 01:02, 10 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • "unequivocally dated iron objects" - is it an iron object, or is it dated to the iron age?
"...There are few unequivocally dated iron objects equivalent to Hallstatt Al-2 in the region: a fragmentary iron bracelet from the cremation..." Boldwin (talk) 01:08, 10 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Spiral Motif
  • "It is found in both the Aegean ..." - what is the "it" being referred to? The meandering and spiral motif, or the parallels between these and others?
The meaning was supposed to be: Scholars recognized parallels between these decorative motifs (spiral, and linked S or running spiral and hook-like curls) on artifacts of the North Thracian group and on objects from the Mycenaean Shaft Graves. It (=spiral) is found in both the Aegean and east-central Europe from the Neolitic onwards.Boldwin (talk) 02:05, 10 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • "... because of a Mycenaean sway to the north of the Danube." - Not sure what is meant by this - possibly influences on the culture?
It is about possible influences on the culture by tradeBoldwin (talk) 01:13, 10 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Firighiaz (Firiteaz)
  • "... on left bank of the Lower Mureş River ..." - which way were you looking? upstream or downstream? Maybe use north south east west?
west Boldwin (talk) 02:53, 10 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • "in the Vienna Museum." - are we sure that there is only one Museum in Vienna?
lol...In this article Vienna Museum refer only to Kunsthistorisches MuseumBoldwin (talk) 02:39, 10 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • "Each of these discs are made from four spirals" - four spirals or four coils?
four coils. Boldwin (talk) 02:39, 10 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Acâş and Săcueni
  • "décor made of relief globule" - ? Needs clarifying as to what a "relief globule" is; "as shown in picture XXX" (if one exists) or describing in more detail.
This was French for series of (small) spherical shape beads on the surface of the bar. These can be seen on the image from the right side of the text. The one called “Gold bracelet Săcueni (Bihor County) Dacian-Hallstattian.Boldwin (talk) 02:39, 10 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Boarta type
  • "Its semi moon-shape endings ..." - Half moon? quarter moon? only a bit like a moon?
I would use the term C-shaped ending Boldwin (talk) 02:51, 10 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Băiceni bracelets
  • "and buttons for vestments" - Is this correct? Vestments are Christian priests clothing, and particularly Catholic at that! I am not so sure that they existed at that time, I would have thought this should be "clothing".
  • I have played around quite a lot with the text there, it was confusing as the first interpretation, horses heads, was then repudiated and remixed with "horses heads had rams horns". I have changed it so that there are now two clear arguments, one "horse-heads" and one "ibex/rams heads". Personally it seems to me that they resemble ceremonial bridles with decorations, not rams horns as they do not curl around properly. It is a shame I did not pursue my archaeology ...
Bracelets with cord ornaments
  • "Such circlets had been discovered at Ardeu" - hmm not sure, but a circlet is a plain crown, this appears to refer to a round bracelet, but maybe not ...?
General

OK, copy-edit and general rearrangement finished. I will run through it again, probably later today as I have stayed up all night to make sure this gets done. Chaosdruid (talk) 09:33, 11 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Images and alignment

edit

(moved into a separate topic from the GOCE copyedit)

On a completely separate note, does anyone think that having images in the reference section, as well as up both sides of the page, means that perhaps there are too many images? Chaosdruid (talk) 21:58, 9 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

The intent was to bring an image in front of the reader. Sometimes, the text is "tough" without an image. But, some seems to be duplicates. We can move some to a gallery.Boldwin (talk) 02:05, 10 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
For example, there are 3 images of spiral volute ends - one shows single, while two are showing the exact same thing, double volute ends. There are some others that look pretty similar, such as the one near the top showing the rings used as currency and one near the end showing them in a much smaller top part of a pic. Maybe you can cut them down some more?
There may be a case for aligning them horizontally across the page, rather than vertically. This is going to help things like the ""Zoomorphic bracelets"" section, the illustration for that is near the bottom of the article next to "Regional findings"

For example you can use the table function:

Dacia gold bracelets from Firighiaz type 1, Late Bronze Age.[1]

9th −8th c. BC, gold bracelets from Firighiaz type 2 (Timis County).[1] (Vienna Museum)

Firighiaz type 3 dated to 9th −8th c. BC[1]

With text in-between instead of getting crowded down one side

Firiteaz type 2 with one and two coils-shape ends (Bronze IV-Hallstatt)[2] Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna.[3]

Double-volute ends Sacosu Mare type; NMIR Museum Romania[4]

Gold bracelet convex double volute-ends Sacosu Mare, Timis County, Romania [5]

This would allow them to be kept within the correct text sections. Chaosdruid (talk) 00:00, 11 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

As a start, I am trying to sort them into the sections they relate to, i.e. all spirals in the spirals section and all horned in the horned section. This can easily be reverted if it messes things up. Chaosdruid (talk) 01:14, 11 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
I like it. Boldwin (talk) 04:44, 11 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
