@WineFan1:, do you need help uploading the image?Bali88 (talk) 18:53, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Bali88, I wanted to upload an image I found on Google, which I made sure was licensed for reuse for the public. When I inserted that image on my page, however, I got a Wikipedia box that threatened to shut down my page. Any suggestions? WineFan1 (talk) 18:58, 14 July 2014 (UTC) WineFan1 (talk)Reply

I'm not sure what message you received, but the main issue is that you did it wrong. To put a photo on wikipedia, it needs to up uploaded on wikipedia first. You just put the url into the article, which won't work. If you look to the left of your screen, you'll see a see a series of links. One of them is "upload file". You will need to save the image file on your computer before you upload it. I don't think you can upload it directly onto wikipedia from a url. Follow the instructions from there. It's fairly simple. I believe you must be a verified user prior to uploading a file. I'm unsure if your account is old enough. I can upload it for you if you need me to. Bali88 (talk) 19:09, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Bear in mind too, just because you found an image on a website, it doesn't mean it's free to use. The image you were trying to insert was hosted on the Cooper's Hawk Winery website. You'll need to prove they are happy for you to release the image into the public domain. Sionk (talk) 19:43, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Correct. There is a form letter that should be submitted. If someone with Cooper's Hawk submits the form found at Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries, that is sufficient. There is an email address listed on the page that can be used. When you upload the photo, click on the "I have permission to use this file" button, and then submit the form filled out by Cooper's Hawk Bali88 (talk) 19:49, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

COI edit

Cooper's Hawk has hired me to update its Wikipedia article. I have researched every proposed change and documented each one with both a link (sometimes links) to a reliable news article and an explanation. I will share the edits here. BlueRoses13 (talk) 13:43, 19 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Correcting the Footnotes edit

I'd like to correct the following five footnotes. These changes are uncontroversial and straightforward. For clarity and ease, I've included both the HTML and the rich text. Thank you.

Correcting Factual Inaccuracies edit

Hello again, Here are several more changes that I think would make this article more accurate. They’re all small and documented. I submit them for your consideration. Thank you very much.

1. Change

41 locations

to

45 locations

Explanation: 2 news articles from 2021 — https://www.nrn.com/casual-dining/cooper-s-hawk-names-beth-scott-chief-restaurant-officer and https://patch.com/illinois/chicago/calendar/event/20210209/982265/coopers-hawk-morton-grove-hosts-open-interviews-for-94-positions — confirm the new number of locations.

  Done Signed, I Am Chaos (talk) 22:56, 20 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

2. Change

Since the first opening in Orland Park, 31 other locations have opened across the Midwest and Southeastern United States, including the company's expansion into Michigan in June 2018.

to

The company has since expanded to 45 locations across the Midwest and Southeastern United States.

Explanation: 2 news articles from 2021 — https://www.nrn.com/casual-dining/cooper-s-hawk-names-beth-scott-chief-restaurant-officer and https://patch.com/illinois/chicago/calendar/event/20210209/982265/coopers-hawk-morton-grove-hosts-open-interviews-for-94-positions — confirm the new number of locations.

  Done Signed, I Am Chaos (talk) 00:30, 21 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

3. Change

In 2014 the company's projected earnings were $121 million in revenue.

to

In 2019, the company's revenue was $280 million.

Explanation: Projected earnings from 7 years ago aren’t useful to the Wikipedia reader. Here are latest actual earnings I could find in a news article: “The upscale-casual chain generated $282.3 million in system sales” in 2019 (https://www.restaurantbusinessonline.com/financing/coopers-hawk-be-sold-ares-management).

For what it’s worth (I know we don’t like Forbes contributors), the well-known restaurant analyst Gary Stern confirmed $280M in his Forbes column in 2019: https://www.forbes.com/sites/garystern/2019/01/15/coopers-hawk-winery-restaurant-builds-a-wine-club-to-success/?sh=7aa3f0a740a0.

I agree, the data was out-of-date.   Done Signed, I Am Chaos (talk) 22:59, 20 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

4. Change

The chain has locations in Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

to

The chain has locations in 10 states, including Florida, Illinois, and Ohio.

Explanation: A list of 10 states seems promotional. Let’s list 3. The source remains the same: https://chwinery.com/locations.

5. Remove

The top selling wine is an unusual sparkling almond wine with "[p]owerful aromas of almond cookie, maraschino cherry and nutmeg".

Explanation: This sentence was true 7 years ago, when the article (https://www.wsj.com/articles/tim-mcenery-the-daredevil-behind-coopers-hawk-winery-restaurants-1418407857) was published. Today, it is not; sales vary from region to region.

Done I combined the lone sentence left over into the previous paragraph Signed, I Am Chaos (talk) 00:30, 21 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

6. Change

Cooper's Hawk is listed as one of the best restaurants in Chicago in the book Food Lovers Guide to Chicago: The best restaurants, Markets, & local culinary offerings.

to

Cooper's Hawk is listed as one of the best restaurants in Chicago in the book Food Lovers' Guide to Chicago: The Best Restaurants, Markets and Local Culinary Offerings.

Explanation: I corrected the spelling and capitalization of the book title.

Adding the Wine Club and Cleaning Up the “Awards” Section edit

I’d like to submit 3 more changes. The first 2 provide important info that’s missing. The 3rd provides some needed clean up. Thank you.

1. Add to “Restaurant and Winery” Section”

As of 2021, the company has 500,000 wine club members, thus making the club the largest in the United States by membership.

Explanation: This statistic seems like something our readers would want to know. Here are three sources:

a. In 2015, with 163,000 members, the club was "most likely the largest winery-based wine club in the country": https://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20151228/ISSUE03/151229923/cooper-s-hawk-wine-club-may-be-the-largest-in-the-country

b. In 2018, the club had 340,000 members: https://www.restaurantbusinessonline.com/operations/coopers-hawk-lets-members-pay-signature

c. As of July 2021, the club has "more than half a million members": https://www.nrn.com/top-500-restaurants/cooper-s-hawk-winery-restaurants-continues-diversification-more-growth-ahead

2. Add to “Awards” Section

For the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards, Cooper's, in its capacity as the ceremony's official wine, created Cooper's Hawk Artists Red Blend.

Explanation: This fact was covered in People (which Wikipedia considers to be reliable) in an article titled, “See What the Stars Will Be Eating and Drinking at Home for the 2021 SAG Awards”: https://people.com/food/menu-wine-recipe-sag-awards-2021/.

3. Change in “Awards” Section

Cooper's Hawk has earned a number of awards from various local, national and international wine competitions, including: two Double Gold recognitions for its Italian Barbera wine; the Grand Star Award for the Gewürtztraminer; and the title of “Best U.S. Fruit Wine” from a national wine competition in recognition of its apricot and rhubarb wines. The company was also named "Breakout Brand 2013" and "Hot Concept 2010" Winner by Nation's Restaurant News.

to

Cooper's Hawk has earned a number of wine awards from local, national, and international competitions. The awards include being named a "Hot Concept" in 2010 by Nation's Restaurant News,[1] a "MenuMaster" in 2013 by Nation's Restaurant News,[2] and a Top 10 Best Winery Restaurant in 2021 from USA Today.[3]

Explanation: I shrunk the list of 6 awards to the 3 most notable, and I footnoted each.

Signed, BlueRoses13 (talk) 01:20, 27 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Not done: Totally unnecessary: the first 2 requests are promotional in nature, while the 3rd is moot as the Awards section is good as is. Quetstar (talk) 04:52, 27 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Partly done: Mostly done in my way, except for the "largest", as it remains unverifiable. PK650 (talk) 02:08, 25 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you kindly, PK650! I appreciate your favorable response and edits. Best wishes, BlueRoses13 (talk) 16:01, 28 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Tim McEnery and Francis Ford Coppola Winery edit

Hi all, Here’s the last batch of changes I’d like to propose. I’ve provided footnotes to support each claim, along with an explanation. Thanks for your consideration.

1. Change 1st Sentence

Cooper's Hawk & Restaurants is an Illinois-based restaurant group.

to:

Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restaurants is an Illinois-based restaurant group founded by Tim McEnery.

Explanation: Cooper’s is inextricably associated with its founder; see (1) https://www.tampabay.com/things-to-do/food/dining/coopers-hawk-winery-and-restaurant-opened-its-first-florida-location/2115237/; (2) https://www.wsj.com/articles/tim-mcenery-the-daredevil-behind-coopers-hawk-winery-restaurants-1418407857; and (3) https://www.nrn.com/casual-dining/look-tim-mcenery-s-initiatives-cooper-s-hawk-winery-restaurants. So it seems important to mention him in the lead.

Also, for reference, the pages for Smith & Wollensky, The Cheesecake Factory, and P.F. Chang's all mention their respective founders in the lead.

2. Change in "History" Section

Founders Tim and Dana McEnery opened their first Cooper's Hawk in October 2005 in Orland Park, Illinois, three years after Tim McEnery, then working in restaurant management, noticed that very few wineries had an on-site restaurant.

to:

Founder Tim McEnery opened his first Cooper's Hawk in October 2005 in Orland Park, Illinois, three years after he noticed that very few wineries had an on-site restaurant.

Explanation: The given footnote — https://www.tampabay.com/things-to-do/food/dining/coopers-hawk-winery-and-restaurant-opened-its-first-florida-location/2115237/ — does not mention Dana. Instead, it refers to Tim as the "founder."

Further research — including https://www.wsj.com/articles/tim-mcenery-the-daredevil-behind-coopers-hawk-winery-restaurants-1418407857 and https://www.nrn.com/casual-dining/look-tim-mcenery-s-initiatives-cooper-s-hawk-winery-restaurants — confirms that Tim was the sole founder.

3. Add to "History" Section

Cooper’s Hawk produces 12 limited edition wines each year. Some of these wines are produced in collaboration with other winemakers, like the Francis Ford Coppola Winery.[4]

Explanation: Here are the pertinent passages from the footnote (Crain's Chicago Business):

  • "In addition to nearly 50 varietals, the winery produces 12 'wines of the month' each year."
  • "The fast-growing chain ... has been part of collaborations with the likes of Francis Ford Coppola Winery."

4. Change 2nd Sentence

The company's 45 locations each include a full-service restaurant, tasting room, and retail store.

to:

The company's 45 locations each include a full-service restaurant, Napa-style tasting room, and artisanal retail store.

Explanation: These two adjectives — "Napa-style" and "artisanal" — come verbatim from CBS (https://tampa.cbslocal.com/2021/04/27/coopers-hawk-winery-to-open-fruitville-commons-location-now-hiring-1/):

"Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants, a nationally renowned establishment combining an upscale casual restaurant, Napa-style tasting room and artisanal retail market, will open its third Gulf Coast location at the new Fruitville Commons in Sarasota."

Signed, BlueRoses13 (talk) 17:53, 4 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Partly done: Thank you. I gave you the benefit of the doubt on the founders, given I couldn't access the WSJ. As for the last request, these are peacock words. PK650 (talk) 02:16, 25 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you again, PK650! You are 100% right about those peacock words. (For your reference, the WSJ article says, "The almond sparkler is the best-selling wine at Cooper’s Hawk, according to the company’s CEO and founder Tim McEnery." The caption on the photo also says, "Tim McEnery, founder and CEO of Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants.") Signed, BlueRoses13 (talk) 16:04, 28 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

5 Tweaks edit

Hi again, I’m back with a few small COI requests. I’ve included footnotes to support each request, along with an explanation for why our readers will benefit from each change. I'm tagging User:PK650 in light of their review the last time around. Thanks for your consideration. Signed, BlueRoses13 (talk) 20:00, 15 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

1. Number of Locations edit

Both the lead section and the history section say the company has 45 locations. In fact, the company now has 54 locations. An article from November 2002, in AZ Big Media (“Cooper’s Hawk Winery opens 3rd Arizona location in Gilbert”), confirms 54:

“As a lifestyle brand that offers upscale casual dining and wine, the vibrant suburb of Phoenix is the perfect spot for the brand’s 54th location.”

2. Locations edit

The lead section (the fourth sentence) lists the states where Cooper’s Hawk has restaurants. The source is Cooper’s website. Can we add Iowa?

An article from December 2022, in the Des Moines Register (“Love wine? At new Clive restaurant Cooper's Hawk, the wine is more important than the food”), confirms Iowa:

“The brand has 50ish locations … The Clive location marks the first in Iowa.”

3. Number of Wine-Club Members edit

The “restaurant and winery” section says the wine club, as of July 2021, has 500,000 members. In fact, the number is now 600,000. An article from December 2022 in the Des Moines Register (“Love wine? At new Clive restaurant Cooper's Hawk, the wine is more important than the food”) confirms 600,000:

“The restaurant boasts 600,000 members in its wine club.”

Similarly, an article from July 2022, in RiverBender.com (“Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants Celebrated Its Grand Opening In St. Peters, Is Open To The Public”), says this:

“The Cooper’s Hawk Wine Club is a community of nearly 600,000 members.”

4. Wine Spectator Award edit

Would it be possible to add the following award to the “awards” section?

Award: Best of Award of Excellence (awkward name, I know)
Year: 2022
Awarder: Wine Spectator
Source: “7 Outstanding Winery Restaurants,” Wine Spectator, 2022

Why will this change benefit our readers? Among oenophiles, Wine Spectator is a standard setter, so this national recognition is a big deal.

Thus, we’d change this:

The awards include being named a "Hot Concept" in 2010 and a "MenuMaster" in 2013 by Nation's Restaurant News,[5][6][7][8] and a Top 10 Best Winery Restaurant in 2021 from USA Today.[9]

to this:

The awards include being named a "Hot Concept" in 2010 and a "MenuMaster" in 2013 by Nation's Restaurant News,[10][11][12][13] and a Top 10 Best Winery Restaurant in 2021 from USA Today,[14] as well as earning "Best of Award of Excellence" in 2022 from Wine Spectator.[15][16]

5. Piccolo Buco and Esquire edit

Would it be possible to add the following sentence, as a new paragraph, at the end of the “restaurant and winery” section?

In 2022, Cooper’s Hawk opened two branded restaurants under the name, “By Cooper’s Hawk”: Piccolo Buco, a pizzeria in Oak Brook, Illinois, where patrons cut pizza with scissors,[17][18] and Esquire, a wine-focused restaurant in Chicago, where a visiting chef rotates every quarter.[19][20]

Why will this change benefit our readers? These two new restaurants have earned coverage from independent, secondary media outlets.
