British or English?

I saw this at WP:VPM. Nationality in the UK can be a thorny issue, per Wikipedia:Nationality of people from the United Kingdom it's best to go with how most reliable sources describe the subject or how the subject describes themselves. Having looked through the refs used in the article, and tracked down the now deadlink bio on her website[1], none actually has one way or the other. I wouldn't support that, it's very messy and is also not supported by any reliable sources. There aren't sources to says she's British, and aren't sources to say she's English. So saying both isn't an improvement. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested ∆transmissions∆ °co-ords° 18:54, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

I would make sure to be consistent. So either British or English. Looking at other British artists, the consensus is to be as specific as possible here. British could be anywhere in the UK and if we designate someone as English/Scottish/Welsh etc. then that would cause less confusion. Look at David Bowie for instance, who is described as an English singer, Tom Jones (singer) as Welsh or Jim Kerr who is described as Scottish. Karst (talk) 08:30, 18 October 2023 (UTC)

• This is another case where Wikipedia has difficulty because of its obsession with nationality. Surely when reliable sources do not give us either the thing to do is simply leave out the nationality. I note that she made her name on "Britain's Got Talent" not "England's Got Talent", but I doubt if that is relevant. Whether I call myself English or British depends completely on context - if I am discussing international football with a Scot then I am English, but if I am discussing varieties of the English language with an American then I am British.
