Hi. On top of the article I still see {{notability|date=November 2009}}. There are sources enough. (references). Maybe someone can delete 'notability'. I don't come here very often, I'm from the Dutch Wikipedia. Greetings, - Richardkiwi (talk) 21:35, 17 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Notability

edit

When referring to the Athletes section of the notability guideline for biographies referred to by the notice it is said that a person is generally notable if they meet any of the following standards:

  • People who have competed at the fully professional level of a sport, or a competition of equivalent standing in a non-league sport such as swimming, golf or tennis.[8]
  • People who have competed at the highest amateur level of a sport, usually considered to mean the Olympic Games or World Championships.

Therefore if Cees de Vreugd has competed at the highest level in the sport, he would be deemed notable according to the above. Note only did Cees compete, but he placed third in the World’s Strongest Man (“WSM”) in 1985. The competition is cited as the highest level of competition in strength athletics by many sources. On the WSM article page two further sources are cited, one of which is Randall J. Strossen of Ironmind, the publisher of Milo, which is one of the main publications in the field of strength athletics. A quick look in newspaper archives gives similar quotes in the The Guardian, the Philadelphia Inquirer, Salt Lake Tribune, The Herald-Dispatch. The Guardian in fact estimates that estimated worldwide audience of the event is 220 million (The Guardian, Saturday 31 December 2005, Give me strength).

My personal conclusion is that notability criteria has therefore been met.
