Two stubs ...

Merged Bowdoin (Arctic Schooner) and USS Bowdoin (IX-50) Articles Into One
editTwo stub pages, combined into one, and a redirect from USS Bowdoin (IX-50) applied. Hopefully it has the seal of approval. :) - Sege1701 (talk) 23:37, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
Not the only one
editI would like to remove the statement that Bowdoin is the only American schooner designed for Arctic exploration, but I would like to discuss my suggestion rather than just arbitrarily change it.
The fact is that the B.B. Crowninshield (not Fife) designed schooner Adventuress was designed for an expedition to Alaska. Her hull was built strong and partially armored with Ironwood for protection from the ice, but she was also designed to be sleek and fast because of the long trip around from New England to Alaska. It is very clear to look at the two vessels that the Bowdoin was designed for far more brutal arctic conditions than the Adventuress. And the expedition of the Adventuress was more specific. She was in the Bering and was prepared for the Arctic, but I'm not sure if she actually entered the Arctic Ocean proper which begins at the Bering Straights in Alaska. The Bering, however, is considered to be "arctic waters" and can be very tough on a ship. (I have worked there.) She also undoubtedly spent much less time in the arctic regions than the Bowdoin. I would like to see that sentence read that the Bowdoin was purpose-built for long term Arctic exploration or something more accurate like that, than to say she was the only one designed for Arctic exploration.
Coincidentally (or maybe not) B.B. Crowninshield's first name was Bowdoin. FatBear1 (talk) 22:28, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
