– The word "Conference" is not really necessary and makes an already-long title even longer. The proper name for the tournament is "Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament" as listed on the conference's official websites.^[1]^[2] This name is also used by ticketing sites^[3]^[4]^[5] and some other secondary sources.^[6]^[7]^[8]

Some sources do use other variants on the name, such as "Big Ten men's basketball conference tournament",^[9] or "Big Ten Conference Tournament"^[6]. Most commonly, sources will just say "Big Ten Tournament" and use context to indicate which sport,^[10]^[11]^[12] but that won't work here – we need disambiguous article titles. The title "Big Ten Conference men's basketball tournament" does see some use,^[13] but it's just one of many variants out of the crowd (and it's worth remembering that some sources might be copying us).

I'm also proposing similar moves for all the other Big Ten tournaments based on the same reasoning (with the exception of men's ice hockey and the 2015–17 women's lacrosse articles, which already use my naming scheme). All the tournaments exclude "Conference" from the official title, and I suspect the names used in secondary sources would look pretty similar for each of them. This is a large, sweeping change. But, it really needs to be upped to an even higher platform. There are 40 such conferences. Of those, 23 of them use "Conference" in the title. I'm not going to list every single one of them, but a sampling; American South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, Big South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, Great West Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, Northeast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, Pac-12 Conference Men's Basketball Tournament. That 23 doesn't include things like Conference USA Men's Basketball Tournament or MEAC Men's Basketball Tournament (where the 'C' represents 'Conference'). If we're going to do this we should be consistent in our naming style across all of these. --Hammersoft (talk) 02:17, 24 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
- Keep in mind that the East Coast, Metro, Northeast, Southern, and Southwest Conferences are typically known by their full names, so they should retain "Conference".
