Titling edit

Surely this should be an article on the book rather than an article on the person? Everything after the lead section covers the text. Ironholds (talk) 06:50, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I would not object splitting off the book information into a separate article; the Discourse is certainly a notable book, what with it being e.g. (apparently) the first European book to contain Chinese characters (reported from China, as opposed to the ones reported from Japan), and the first book on China translated into English. There won't be all that much left in Escalante's article (as it stands now) after the split, but I strongly believe that the article on the author should remain, even if as a stub, as he obviously is a notable enough author. Besides the Discourse on China, two other of his books have been recently reissued in Spain with scholarly introductions, which contain more info about the author as well. (So we probably do know quite a bit more on him now than D. Lach believed, thinking about that). In particular, Discursos de Bernardino de Escalante al Rey y sus ministros is a collection of 20 years' worth of his memorials to the Spanish throne, with quite a few gems in it (including, e.g., his proposal in 1590 to re-try the conquest of England!). I am busy with other things at the moment, but I do hope someone with more interest in the Spanish Kingdom of ca. 1600 will expand the article eventually! -- Vmenkov (talk) 12:18, 1 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Sure, but until they do expand we simply don't have enough info to justify an article on him. Renaming would be the appropriate action. Ironholds (talk) 15:20, 1 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

I've added a few basic facts of his bio - mostly for the early part of his life, as these pages of the 1995 were more accessible via Google Books. No hard copy in the local libraries. Anyway, now there is certainly more material on Bernardino himself in this article than the entire length of many stub articles we have. -- Vmenkov (talk) 04:15, 2 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Neat; that improves things. Thanks! Ironholds (talk) 15:50, 2 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
