Good enough?Edit

The legend about origin ... a bit fishy?Edit

It's a nice story, but I can't find any support for it. It is in Tom Aikens Fish book – but that was published in 2008 and the text is identical to Wikipedia's (dating from 2006) and so smells like a crib. Does anybody know more? Alexbrn (talk) 13:22, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

You've got a potential reference at http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/arbroath/auchmithie/index.html, most other sites are using (largely uncredited) Wikipedia stuff. The old village hall at Auchmithie burned down, I suspect that's probably mingled its way into the history of the Smokie over the years. Nick (talk) 12:29, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
Cool - thanks! Alexbrn (talk) 12:32, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

It sounds awful like the Chinese discovery of roast pork. (The piggery burnt down.) I was taught this at school as a legend and one or two novels have made reference to it. (For example "It was as expensive as the traditional way of making Chinese roast pork.") All my friends knew the story but I wouldn't have clue where to find a definitive reference. I suspect that the Arbroath Smokey story is also one of those 'Everyone knows' stories.OrewaTel (talk) 06:03, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
