four wild terrestial animals?
editNice article! What are the "four wild terrestial animals" established on Svalbard, though? Southern voles, perhaps polar bears? I can't find support for the factoid in the PDF files of the two references given at the end of the sentence. Also perhaps "mammals" is the term that is meant, not "animals" which is too general; surely there are some terrestial grubs or beetles or insects or wormss in the soil or above ground on Svalbard; these are all animals colloquially and formally (biological classification-wise), too. Why not just list the four mammals(?), at least in a footnote, especially as there is no Fauna of Svalbard article to link to. --doncram 03:02, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
- No replies...but i find my way to this oldweb.sysselmannen.no source which seems to be the source of confusion. The page is labelled "Animals". It documents that there are 2 mammals on Svalbard: Arctic fox and Svalbard reindeer. It is NOT a proper source to say there are just these mammals. Note it misses the voles. It does not say there are not others. It describes the polar bears as being more ocean-based. So that leaves us 3 known land-based mammals. And there's one bird that over-winters. There is no discussion of insects which are animals too, etc. It would still be quite wrong to say there are 4 terrestial animals so I am now revising the wording in the article. --doncram 02:06, 15 December 2014 (UTC)
- And i have set up redirect from "Fauna of Svalbard" to Environment of Svalbard#Fauna, which discusses 4 terrestial mammals, counting the polar bear. It seems disputable whether the polar bear is terrestial vs. ocean-based. Over and out. --doncram 02:23, 15 December 2014 (UTC)
- The intent was to reflect that there are only four mammals which spend the majority of their time on land (as polar bears do). This was the general consensus in Svalbard, among layman and scientist alike, when I visited. Stamboliyski (talk) 06:53, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

- Thanks, Stamboliyski, I appreciate your replying and clarifying. I just now further copy-edited the article, by this edit, now including the list of 4 mammals (vole, Svalbard reindeer, arctic fox, and polar bear) in the supporting note. I think it is now just a little bit better for readers, and I hope this meets your approval. I see you created the article and did most of its development. Thanks again for that! cheers, --doncram 15:48, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
