Wayne: I found a site devoted to A. Peter Dewey. I'm thinking of expanding this article based on the information presented. However, I'm not great at writing. If someone wants to help out, that would be great.

Vietnam War

edit

If, as the article states, the Viet Minh and the French were not yet in conflict, and, as stated in that article, the Vietnam War was the Second Indochina War, with the First Indochina War starting in 1946, is there in fact any reason to consider A. Peter Dewey a casualty of that war? By the same logic, one might search for the first American killed in Japan and label him the first American casualty of World War II.

That's right. Let's say Vietnam simply. Dewey came to Saigon in the South from Colombo ( Ceylon) as did the Free French Detachment in the impedimenta of General Cracey with his Indian Division to disarm the Japanese, while Archimedes Patti came to Hanoi from Kunming (Yunnan).

This article states that Col. Dewey was shot accidentally; however, it seems he was shot on purpose as the result of mistaken identity.

True. Good point. I will change that. Mwprods (talk) 21:48, 23 March 2013 (U

This article takes a very US centric view of Vietnamese history, hence the confusion about which war he was killed in. From the Vietnamese POV there was one Vietnam War of Independence. It begain with the Declaration of Independence read by Ho Chi Minh on 2 Sept. 1945 and ended with the fall of Siagon on 30 April 1975. Dewey was the first US military killed in that war. In Vietnam they say "We have fought and beat 4 of the 5 permenate members of the UNSC, not Russia yet." In 1945 they fought the Japanese and the French. Dewey was shot because the Viet Minh thought he was French, and since the OSS was working with the VM at the time, Dewey was also the first US "friendly fire" casuality. Dewey's death

edit

I just read that Dewey may have been shot for "cussing" a Viet Minh guard? The circumstances of his death remain a mystery according to my reading. As well as the rest of his activity with the OSS.[1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mauricemcmurry (talkcontribs) 00:02, 19 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
